IMO, GoDaddy has become the worst registrar out there. Their only goal is to confuse customers by making their antiquated website horribly tricky.

If, for whatever reason, your domain name expires at GoDaddy, GoDaddy will take your domain and auction it after 26 days.

GoDaddy will give you no chance to renew the domain or get the domain back. GoDaddy has become the worst registrar. All GoDaddy cares about is taking expired domains and putting them up for auction, then pocketing all the money. GoDaddy is waiting for your domains to expire so they can take them from you.

Here is a list of reputable registrars that have much more consumer friendly practices and policies:

NameSilo.com
Dynadot.com
Epik.com
Enom.com
BigRock.com
NameCheap.com
Name.com
NameBright

And there are many others. Please avoid GoDaddy. They are horrible.

Avoid GoDaddy at all cost. They also gouge on prices. The others are much cheaper, provide much better service, and do not take your domains just 26 days after they expire.

I hope this helps others.

Best of luck

So how many days 'after' a domain expires does one need to finally renew it? (and it doesn't go to auction in 26 days.)

That doesnโ€™t matter if it falls in the rules of your grace period. The only way you can pry your domain back is to pay their ridiculous fees.

I avoid that Monster and take any name I happen to get out of there the minute I can.

What does GoDaddy have to do with you not being organized and renewing your domains on time? They send emails. Just checked my Trash:

From: GoDaddy Renewals
Title: Renew your expired products before you lose them.

I just logged in, they have messages at the top, in red:

blahblah.COM and 2 others have expired. Renew.

blahblah.COM and 65 other domains are expiring soon. Renew.

There is some other notification on the top with a little bell.

They have a page explaining the Expiration timeline:

https://www.godaddy.com/help/renewing-my-expired-domain-name-609

"If, for whatever reason, your domain name expires at GoDaddy,"

What other reason is there besides you not renewing it on time?

Hi you can renew up to day 30.

See earlier thread: https://www.namepros.com/threads/go...our-domains-after-30-days-expiration.1051137/

This has confused some veterans because before you could transfer out up to day 42, at reg fee - I had done it. But now you can't. The upside of that is that if you buy an expired domain at Godaddy after day 30, as long as it really is at Godaddy and not a transfer in, you definitely get the name. Before, all expired purchases could be snapped back by the owner after you paid, though you did get a refund.

But also DO NOT TRUST GODADDY PHONE SUPPORT. If they don't do what you asked, you have no easy way to refer to what they promised - ask for a transcript and they ask you for a subpoena.

So that means use the text-based chat and save the text, but it is only available at certain times and can involve over an hour wait. Also now it seems to be based in a third country, judging by the deteriorating language and performance of chat, a real warning sign.

So in the years I have used Godaddy there has been a steep decline in quality of service and support and I would not willingly keep anything of value there, not just on cost grounds.

NameSilo.com
Dynadot.com

In terms to most time allotted to renew a domain before losing it:

Dynadot >
Namesilo

Dynadot = 40 days before being auctioned off | renewal during day 31-40 incur an additional $10 fee.

Namesilo = 31 days before auctioned off | 34-64 days before $75 restoration fee.

Most of my names are at GoDaddy and so far I haven't had any issues with them. Agreed (as mentioned above) that they did change the rules on expired domain names. That hurt a little to the domain owner but at the same time it was good for the Expired Domain Auction Buyers (for names held at GD).

Their renewal fees are high, but if you have a large portfolio then I recommend joining their Domain Discount Club which makes their renewals very reasonable ($8.47 for .com).

As far as expired domains -- since their terms are in their service Agreement I can't really hold anything against them. They are a public company and are trying to make as much money as possible for their share holders. It's my responsibility to be on top of upcoming expirations and make a decision to renew, transfer out, or let expire... (This does remind me to make sure at least one family member knows how to log into my account and renew my domain names -- in case something were to happen to me).

I do wish they offered free Whois privacy (like Dynadot and others). I thought the GDPR would reduce Whois spam emails -- perhaps it has a little bit, but I still receive Whois spam on a daily basis.

Remember that GoDaddy was founded by a guy that encourages the practice of "canned trophy hunting", which is the the practice of raising captive human-friendly baby lions in order to be shot by "trophy hunters".

Yes old Bob Parsons. He's gone now, and with him all those "Godaddy girls" that made the website a sexist freakshow. I always wondered if they were his trophy wives. Now Godaddy is focused on profits for shareholders, instead of elephants they are hunting customers and stuffing them.

i uunderstand your frustration, because they reduce renewal timing

They still have the best exposure to sell domain at bin fast

godaddy offer some uniques stats about the whois request of all your domains,
this can help to know which domain get more attention from prospects
i tried most well know registrar, and i plan to move most of my domains to godaddy
their interface make it easier to manage a portfolio, and their export function is the best compared to others

well no registrar perfect really.. but you gotta say facts as facts are:

godaddy takes yer name to expired auction on day -26.

u get til around day -10 or so to renew it on gd at no redemption fee.. after that you pay a fee and can still renew it on gd.

any time from day -1 to -30 you can also transfer it away with no cost.

before they had policy that you cannot transfer it after day -30... but due to popular demand they modified it not long ago in such way that if there are no bids on auction, even if name is more than -30 expired... you can still transfer it away. as soon as it gets bid (and its at least -30 days), name is blocked from transfering.

hope that makes things clearer.
;)

p.s. as side note.. not just gd registered names go to gd expired auctions... they take them from several other registrars... such as namecheap (not all names though)... domain/dotster/netfrims.. and maybe some others I do not know of.

The best option for serious domainer: RESELLER account and individual prices/support...
Full control over expired domains... no any auctions... etc.

It doesn't affect US registrars...
Their .com/.net local WHOISes are visible as it was prior GDPR, no any changes.

Due to an issue with my credit card, I had two names expired on Godaddy. one of them is now listed for $xx,xxx in afternic and the other one was taken from the auction. I absolutely had no chance to grab them back. While in another scenario, at the same time one of my domain was expired in Namecheap, but Namecheap allows me a grace period to renew my domain.
