GoDaddy has to pay the registries a set amount for each reg. If they are paying the registry $5 and offering discount regs @ $3 they are losing money.

Even on .COM/NET their profit margin is very slim (with coupons).

There is nothing it offers you can't get somewhere else. Not one thing.

This may or may not be true, but not all in one place. Personally, I think their search for your domains is second to none. Overall, I think their control panel is second to none also, but their checkout sucks big time. Their Preset Profiles is only bettered by eNom's Magic Folders, there are very few Registrars with this feature. Prices are good also, but you can always find another Registrar with lower prices, but not one offering all the features at GoDaddy.

I think their CP is horrible. It's poorly laid out and I have to open IE because it's not compatible with Opera. All that ajax crap they try to force doesn't work too well. It's a very loaded page. I find the Moniker interface to be much better. Heck the Namecheap control panel is better...umm...actually just about every control panel is better..cept maybe Directi.

Go Daddy can afford to throw out coupons used by domainers as they are the only ones that do massive advertising which attracts end users who do register a domain cheap and then fall for all the upsells and might even look to tdnam and their premium listings.

GoDaddy is the gorilla in registrations just like Sedo is for the aftermarket. Go Daddy with their tdnam and premium listings could continue to grab more market share on aftermarket domains if they continue their agressive advertising which I think they will as I hear them on the radio and see them on tv frequently.

If it takes upsells to afford the advertising they are doing then more power to them as I don't see other companies bringing domains to the public which is needed if anyone wants domain offers to come from end users instead of domainers which is where the money is.

We seem to have to agree to differ then. Their site works fine for me in Firefox. Neither Moniker or to a lesser extend NameCheap, provide the list of features GoDaddy offers, which I find important and use (well that is until I transfer my domains to DynaDot because of the whois thingy.. not important if you only have a couple of hundred domains).

I fail to see your rationing about GD affording coupons without losing money... hell, they blow $1mil on Super Bowl ads, c'mon.

which is exactly the reason they have end user customers that buy domains, seo, hosting etc...

other registrars just have domainers as they don't advertise anywhere near the scale that Go Daddy does so they don't tap into the user base that spends more.

I just consolidated another few hundred to Go Daddy as I'm okay with looking at a few ads if thats what it takes for them to offer low prices as the money I save makes it worth it.

Sorry but no they don't, not most of them. I doubt many ppl use their hosting etc (at least not enough to offset their losses). Do some research and you'd see how 'lucrative' GD is as a business. It matters very little how much they make with hosting compared to their losses from a 99-cent coupon.

I make quite a bit a month from cj.com from a banner on my site and people seem to be buying everything, hosting, ssl etc...

My only point is a domainer with a coupon is a very low profit margin compared to an end user that doesn't give a damn about price considering Go Daddy is the upsell king and offers much more than just hosting and end users buy things sometimes without even knowing if they need it or not.

Go Daddy is branding themselves and gaining mindshare so when end user 2 asks end user 1 where they have their domains Go Daddy will be mentioned more than anyone else so a continuation of previous advertising with some free word of mouth. Walk down the street and ask end users if they have heard of Go Daddy and then ask if they have heard of any other registrar and I think you will find Go Daddy is more recognized because they do spend so much on advertising. Could be looked at as not cost effective but I think when the whole general public is aware of your brand compared to any other registrar that has to pay off eventually.

"His site had a 16% share of the domain name business 6 years ago when it aired it's first racy Super Bowl ad. Today GoDaddy's global market share is more than 48%."

I'm happy with their coupon codes and my account rep and with the advertising they are doing should lead to more of my premium domain listings being sold. I see nobody else reaching out to end users at the same pace or providing similar pricing so for me Go Daddy is my favorite. Also most domain sales I have done with end users they already had a Go Daddy account so that makes things easier than telling them to go sign up at a registrar they have never heard of.

they assume they will recoup the discount code regs overtime , surely this is obvious
