question Godaddy Auctions Please Explain Where The Buy It Now & Starting Auction Prices Come From If They Are All Expired Domains?

I called Afternic today to try to understand the difference between Afternic and Godaddy Auctions fin 2025 and the woman who I spoke to did a very good job explaining things to me except how the starting bid prices and the Buy It Now prices are set on Godaddy Auctions. I'm hoping someone here can clarify a few things for me.

Premise: Godaddy Auctions in 2025 are for expired domains only. They can be won by the Highest bidder or bought directly via Buy It Now. Here are my questions.

1. What determines if a Domain can be bought via Buy It Now and how is the the Buy It Now Price determined? Was it the amount of money the original Domain Holder had it on sale for or is it the Dollar Amount Godaddy thinks it's worth? If the Buy It now item does not sell after X amount of days, does the price get lowered by Godaddy and by how much?

2. Is a domain that was not originally listed by the buyer with a Buy It Now Price then made an auction item instead of a Buy It Now Item? Who then determines the starting bid price and how is it determined? I'm assuming domains that did not have a sales price all go to auctions and domains that had a sale price become Buy It Now items. Is that correct?

3. Can the original owner of the expired domain then renew the Domain while bids are in progress but the auction hasn't ended? How about if someone has purchased the domain at the Buy It Now Price if the Domain has not been transferred? Can the the owner renew the domain that was now bought by the Buy It Now Purchaser but not yet transferred? If the Auction has ended and the Domain has noot been transferred can the original ownerstill renew the domain?

I'd appreciate your input as this was not made clear to me by Afternic, Thank you.

GD Auctions include the domains listed on Afternic and GoDaddy (List for Sale). These are "offer-style" auctions (domain details page shows Inventory Type = Member listings). All BIN priced domains are in effect BIN+MO on GD Auctions, minimum offer is set at 75% of BIN.

Then there are different "bid-style" auctions:

They also periodically auction names from their own portfolio.

Not sayin your wrong but the woman at Afternic told me specifically that Godaddy Auctions no longer include domains on Afternic or any active domains. Anyone else?

Happy to help, @Planet9.

Think of Afternic as the sell-side, and GoDaddy Auctions as the buy-side.

When you list a domain at Afternic, itโ€™s automatically syndicated across our network - GoDaddy Auctions included. If youโ€™ve set a Buy It Now (BIN) price in Afternic, that price is displayed across our distribution network, including GoDaddy Auctions. If you donโ€™t set a BIN, it displays as Make Offer. (Tip: check your Minimum Offer setting in Afternic - the default is $20, and most sellers prefer to set that higher.)

On the GoDaddy Auctions side, the majority of what you see are expired domains. More than 35,000 new names hit the platform daily from GoDaddy and our partners. Hereโ€™s how it works:
  • Expired domains go into a 10-day public auction.
  • If there are no bids, the name moves to Closeout, where the price drops daily over five days to as low as $5.
Alongside those expiring names, youโ€™ll also see Afternic listings syndicated, giving them exposure to the same buyer audience.

One important note: sellers canโ€™t list names directly at GoDaddy Auctions anymore. Afternic is the entry point, and it handles the syndication automatically so your domains appear across GoDaddy Auctions and the broader network.

Thank you for that. What happens though if the expired Domain Holder wants to renew his domain after it is sold or won by the highest bidder but has not yet been transferred to him? Can the expired domain holder still renew it at the renewable price?
