There is a domain that has expired that I would like to purchase, however GoDaddy has the domain listed at the auction site for 'buy now' for 600 or bid 390. What happens if no one bids or buys it?

Thanks!

Try registering it at another registrar; sometimes private owners will list a domain at Godaddy and then the domain expires and is deleted by the registry. But it could still be listed on Godaddy's platform, so GD will show the domain "not available" but at auction.

If the domain is truly available, then querying another registrar should work for you.

And funny enough, if you contact them about it, they do not even remove it. So they basically do not want you to reg names there! D-:

I know this, because I contacted them once regarding a name that the previous owner had deleted (not expired), and I was unable to reg it at GD because the previous registrant had it listed for sale there.

It could just be that I was talking to a lazy person over the phone, or stupidity on Godaddys part.

This is seriously something which GD must change. :|

If a name is being deleted/dropped, they should ensure that sales listings must be removed immediately to prevent things like this.

I called GD. The domain is in fact expired, however GD said it's still for sale because is someone buys it they can renew the name and still sell it to me....

So in other words they are saying if the domain is expired and someone is still foolish enough to buy the domain from the godaddy market vs. registering it elsewhere, then the godaddy staff can go ahead and register it for you at the for sale price. Isn't that very kind of them. Call me crazy but I might call that sticker shock. ;)

Lol, stupidity on their part. I wish they would just resolve it on a call.

Why don't you reg it an Moniker?

Because maybe the person would like to use RegBird. :)

I tried for most stars but had to settle for most ribbons. Oh well.

a) try to backorder it at GD for $18
b) if they won't allow it because it is listed for auction, backorder it at snapnames for $60

way cheaper than $390 in any case

IF the domain has been deleted from the registry and not registered by anyone else, it should be available to hand register, even if Godaddy hasn't yet received that memo. You just won't be able hand register it at Godaddy, which is why I suggested trying another registrar.

If domain is 25-35 days after the expiration date, check Godaddy auctions.

If it's still in the expiring stage (pending delete) and you want this domain, then consider doing a backorder at the major auction platforms.

The domain may have already gone through Godaddy's expiring auction process; in that case, 1 of 3 things have happened:

1. The domain was won at auction and is pending during redemption week.

2. The previous owner renewed it (which he/she is allowed to do up to day 45 after expiration).

3. The name received no bids and will be deleted from the registry in about a month (76 days after official expiration).

Recently I bought an expiring domain (warmemoir dot com) at closeout, and it's firmly in my account.

However, the previous owner has it listed for a $599.00 BIN; it's not my listing.

This means that, for a time, the domain had a double listing at GD.

What happens if someone clicks the BUY button?

Will I be forced to sell at $599?

My point: the Godaddy platform is full of silly glitches.

If you really want it, bid. If not, wait and see what happens and wait for it to be for registration again.

Good luck!

I called GD again, and they said if no one bids then and if someone has a backorder on it they will get it and if there are no backorders then it will be released to the public. I put a backorder on it with NameJet.

The domain expired 8/10/2012

On day 25 (after expiration), the name will go on auction at Godaddy, even if there is a backorder on it. So if the domain expired on August 10, the domain will hit the auction block around September 5 and will be on auction for about 10 days (unless the current owner decides to renew).

If there is a backorder, the opening bid will be $10.00.

If not, the opening bid will be $12.00.

About two years ago, Godaddy stopped awarding backorder domains outright and started allowing multiple backorders on each domain.

Anyone who placed a backorder BEFORE the change has been grandfathered in and no one else may place a backorder on that domain.

HOWEVER, the domain still goes to auction; I know this first hand because I had a grandfathered backorder and the domain went on auction and went for $x,xxx (but then was renewed by the original owner).

So don't worry if you can't place a backorder; just mark your calendar for September 4-6 and bid when the domain hits the auction block.

Sounds like you're talking about "expired" domains vs. "dropped" domains.

Are you familiar with the life cycle of a domain?

First the domain "expires" because the holder didn't renew it. Then it goes into a grace period during which the owner can still change his mind and renew it. If not, it goes into an auction period. If nobody buys it in auction, it "drops" at which point it's available again.

Sounds like Go Daddy are saying that the domain is still in the auction period.

Here's a real case regarding expired domains on auction at Godaddy:

I recently won WarMemoir.com at GD Closeout (I believe it was $10.00).

Meanwhile, there was also a $599 BIN FOR THE SAME DOMAIN, listed by the previous owner. AT THE SAME TIME!

The domain landed in my account. When I went to list it at GD, it said that the domain was already for sale.

I checked. Sure enough, there it is, a $599.00 BIN.

But it's not my listing.

So what happens if someone buys it?

Will I have to sell it? Worse yet, will the domain be transferred with the former owner getting the profit?

I have an email to my rep.

I'm thinking that the same thing is going to happen with the domain you (OP) want (unless the current owner pulls his/her listing, which I doubt).

I wonder why Godaddy doesn't have a filter that catches duplicate listings (public and expiring), but apparently it doesn't.

Ms Domainer. Interesting! I don't see the domain on auction though. I only see it for sale and I have the option to bid(unless that is the GD auction). I called GD and they said it may on auction with GD and I asked why is the starting bid so much. They said its one of two reasons: either its a keyword rich domain or the site has a lot of traffic.

Do I have to place the backorder with GD or can I use namejet and still acquire the name?

You don't need to place a backorder anywhere. The domain will not drop (be deleted) until day 75-76 after expiration, and the auction system at Godaddy kicks in on day 25, so it will stay with Godaddy until it is renewed or sold at expiring auction.

In fact, placing a backorder will simply attract eyeballs, and you don't really want that. Keep it cool.

The auction you're seeing now appears to be the current owner's auction listing (even though the domain has technically expired). If someone bids on this owner's personal listing, it likely that the current owner will redeem the domain ($80.00) and sell it to the buyer. But this probably won't happen unless it's a top tier domain.

Based on the info you have given (Domain expired August 10), the domain will go to what is called a Godaddy "expiring auction," some time between September 4-6, unless the current owner decides to renew (which is quite possible).

All expiring auctions start at $12.00, unless there's a backorder. In that case, it starts at $10.00, with the backorder as the first bid.

At this point, just sit tight and wait for September 4-6; if the domain gets renewed, it won't go to auction. You can check Whois to see if it gets renewed, but be careful; it may look like it's been renewed (year added), but the registrars have the option of renewing the domain themselves and then getting a refund from the registry if the domain fails to sell at auction; they have to do this by day 45 after expiration.

But if it does go to auction and you win it, you still need to keep mum because the original owner can still renew up to 45 days after expiration.

After you win an auction, GD hangs on to the domain for 7 days (until day 42 after expiration). It then gets awarded to the winner, but, in rare cases, the domain can still be clawed back between days 42-46 (You would get a full refund) and returned to the original owner who may have waited until the very last minute to whine to Godaddy and demand renewal.

It's very tricky and annoying, but it's the way it all works.

This all assumes that the domain is registered at Godaddy (and not just listed there).
