GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

LAblogs.com--went for over $1580 last Friday on godaddy expired auctions. Can somebody tell me why? Is PR4 and 67K backlinks really worth that much?

People who buy these kinda domains take a lot of risk. They don't care much for the domain name itself, if it's quality or not. For $1580 you can get a much better domain.

The guys who buy these kinda names only care about the PR number and how much thousand backlinks it has. Their aim is to monetize the traffic quickly, and hopefully make some profit. If their expectations were too high and make little or nothing from the domain, they can't expect to flip the domain easily to break even. Sometimes the domain is so bad, you wonder why it's in existence! No wonder why the previous owner let it go.

if i understand correctly, the previous owner bought it for $600 from Sedo. It was somekinda big blog aggregator in LA area in 2001-2007. Traffic? What kind of traffic can be there if there is no Alexa number for this domain, and previous was in 22mln or so?

I'm not sure about the domain in question... but was commenting on domains with high PR and large amount of back links which you referred to.

How was PR maintained if the site went down in 2007? Is it then not a fake PR?

If not for the traffic, then for development.... and you have to re-create the pages as they once were, just to maintain those stats. Seems like a lot of work which could also end up with you infringing on someone else copyright.

What else could the person buying it benefit from?

You do know that as these kinda names are flipped from domainer to domainer, those back links eventually become useless. Also, the domain loses it's PR.

Btw, don't go by Alexa ranking to determine traffic. I have a domain with an Alexa rank of about 5 Mill, but does not receive traffic any where close to another domain which doesn't have an Alexa rank at all!!

my guess, really a lot of backlinks from 200 or something domains including .edu

i guess public ( or even a frequent visitor ) with alexa toolbars vs public with none.

I am wondering if the New owner is really the old owner? And not someone who just wanted your domain Hhmmmm :|

Thanks lennco,

I still did not getting any explanation from godaddy regarding the system error.
so it look like it is not old owner renewing it.
all data is different to new ones.

so I did not understand what is the reason Godaddy do this ?

You should send them the copies of the whois and ask for an explanation why the whois of the previous/new owner are different, and what sort of "error" could cause that. This is looking more suspicious, for me.

Thanks stub.
I ask them

What is the Explanation of the system error ?

Example:
Old owner renew it.
Domain not yet expired but auctioned
And other.

Best regards

Utomo

Lets wait what is their reply.
If we tell that the who is different, they will use other excuse.
But if they say old owner renew it. I will give this data. and ask are you sure ?

If that's true then its scary , its about the concept not about a specific domain , i'm pretty sure many readers are considering other registrars after that "incident" !

The expiration date of that record shows 2011, though. If anyone has a DomainTools account or similar, is there any record between 2011 to 2013?

Be careful before you jump to conclusions.

That old whois entry is from about 2010, so it's possible that the new whois entry (Ghanma) has owned the domain since 2011.

You would need to find Whois from 2011 onward.

Oops! Just repeated Dave Zan.

I must sound like an echo.

What they are trying to do ?
wasting my time or making me stop emailing them asking for the explanation ?
or they want more time to think what is best reason they can give to me ?

They usually verify the owner of the account by the PIN. This is especially true if you are calling in... which the only way I ever make contact with my rep. I don't use email to sort out issues.

But I guess it wouldn't hurt to mail the pin to him. Seems like he is keen to look into the matter.

I already give them.
But why they did not ask before.
and just now they ask, after more than one week ?

They are probably just giving you the runaround, and you will get some innocuous response.
