Getting an expired domain on GoDaddy

Hi All,

A domain name that im keen on getting has expired and Im not sure the best way to get the domain. The domain is registered with GoDaddy.com.

My Question is, what is the best approach to get the name?

a)Should I use godaddy's back order service ? My worry with this option is apparently GoDaddy puts all sites to auction regardless of backorders whether you are first or not. Therefore this lets others know there is interest in the domain name. They also inform the current owner to renew quickly as someone has put a back order on their expired domain.

b)Should I wait until the site hits the auction then bid, rather then do a backorder? Im worried if 1 person has put a backorder on the domain does the domain not go to auction? Also how long before the domain goes to auction.
currently it is expired but i can find it in the auction

c)Use pool.com or similar service rather then use goDaddy's backorder? Ive read that godaddy loses it own registered expired domains to other services quite often?

d) Do I backorder on godaddy and use a 3rd party to try get the Domain nam

Any suggestions appreciated
Many Thanks

What was the expiry date? You can check here: http://www.moniker.com/whoisdomain.jsp

When asking these type questions, always mention two things:
1) the registrar
2) the expiry date
The whole story changes according these two factors.

Your domain will be auctioned at godaddy. You should not backorder this domain anywhere. This is not a dropping domain. It is a pre-drop auction. Instead you should join the auction.

The auction will start at $12 with no bidders. On 3 or 4 May 2011 you can reach the auction page from this link (replace example.com with actual domain).

https://auctions.godaddy.com/trpItemListing.aspx?domain=example.com

The auction will last about 10 days. Wait until the last hour to place a bid of $12. On top of whatever you bid you will pay a yearly renewal fee of $8.

Edit:
To join the auction you need to become a member of godaddy auctions which costs $5 a year.

You are right about this. The domain will go to auction regardless of anybody backordering it. If you do backorder godaddy will take your money and place a starting bid for you. This way people who sort auction lists according number of bidders will find your domain and they might want to join as well. Therefore don't backorder at godaddy. It does not have any advantage and it does have a clear disadvantage.

b)Should I wait until the site hits the auction then bid, rather then do a backorder? Im worried if 1 person has put a backorder on the domain does the domain not go to auction? Also how long before the domain goes to auction. currently it is expired but i can find it in the auction
Even if other people backorder the domain, it will go to auction.

c)Use pool.com or similar service rather then use goDaddy's backorder? Ive read that godaddy loses it own registered expired domains to other services quite often?
This is irrelevant. You are talking about pending delete (dropping) domains which is a later stage of expired domains. It does not apply to your domain. It applies to domains that are not sold during the first auction (pre-drop auction) which is what you will join. Your domain is not dropping. Therefore others can not catch it.

d) Do I backorder on godaddy and use a 3rd party to try get the Domain name
No and No.

Thanks Erdy, .
So ill just wait until the auction starts, which looking at the dates you've posted will be roughly 25 days after the expiry date?

If I bid on the domain in the last hour is there any chance the current owner can renew?

Appreciate the help loads

cheers

DiddlyDee, the previous owner can still renew the domain for about 7-10 days after the auction finishes, so even if you win the auction there is still a chance you may not actually 'win' the domain. Having said that though the fact is that an owner renewing a domain so late is rare but is not unknown. Should the owner not renew the domain will be placed into your account 7 - 10 days after the end of the auction.

Hope this helps.

TheBaldOne is correct about previous owner renewing.

Yes, you are right. You just need to wait and join the auction.
