From researching around the net and reading on here it would seem that geographical domain names are a solid investment especially coupled with a profession. does anyone have a top ten of the most valuable cities/countries to look out for? is no problem to just pull off the biggest US cities & hit them but wondered if other places like paris, rome etc... are worth checking out too. thanks :)

namebio.com is the best place to research past domain sales. Try searching for similarly listed and sold domains to get a feel for what the keywords you like could fetch.

One problem is that the top 10 cities (based on population or notoriety) are overly crowded. For example, for Chicago or NY, there is probably nothing left.

There are zillions of unclaimed city+profession dot com domains for smaller cities (including cities like seattle that is not really small). For example seattlepharma.com, seattleinterior.com and seattlegoods.com were still available a few weeks ago.

I am unsure what is the real value of such domains (I am a novice). I suppose not much, or more likely, they are worth close to nothing unless you dig and get someone interested in them. If my three sample domains are still available after being mentioned in the forum, it means they are really worth close to nothing.

This forum does not have much interest for this kind of domains. They tend to trade domains that are sufficiently attractive to raise direct contacts from buyers. Then, these people have real talents to sell them at high prices.

I hope this thread will raise discussions on this subject (city+profession/service domains)

For foreign cities, there are even more domains available. For example ParisDivorceLawyer.com, ParisWindowCleaning.com or ParisApplianceRepair.com are currently available, but I see no value in these (I am french).

It would make no sense for a french company to register such domains. May be ParisSexyGirls.com or ParisTelephone.com could interest someone, but I'd be suspicious. Keep in mind that maybe 80% of french keyword domains are still available. I imagine it'd be the same for Rome or other non English speaking cities.

thanks guys - i have come across nambio before and use it a bit so will do some more research on there cheers definately. interesting point re all the good ones for the big cities already been gone or the market being a bit overcrowded there these days. something to think about thanks. i guess i aim more to sell to end users or via godaddy auctions rather than on here so maybe the good, available one for the smaller cities may suit my plan thanks. interestingly enough when i was looking through expired domains the other day pariscallgirls.com was still free which is funny as you mention that ha ha.

Do you still pursue geo domains ? (apperently yes seen your signature) ?

When you sell on flippa, I assume you sell primarily to resellers. Why no direct sales to end businesses ?

Almost all my sales are to end-users as indicated on my video presentation about selling geo names.

your video is not accessible (reserved for your bidders)

In your flippa auction, you seem to explain to buyers how to resell a domain to end users. That may be the reason for my confusion

Oups... I missed one of your message explaining that you rarely sell on flippa. Now, all things are clear.

It does not really matter how big a city is. I had several geo + profession/service names and what I found was that it was not the city or the profession that made a difference but pure luck that I found somebody who was interested in creating an online presence for his particular business at that particular point in time.

I remember having several NewYork domains it seemed logical at the time that a bigger city would have more leads to sell to and ultimately give me better results. But what happened was that other cities+professions outsold everything NewYork simply by pure luck. I did really well with Cheyenne and Tuscon for example.

The best advice I can give you is to not put too many eggs in the same geo basket

Did you see significant differences in selling prices for different cities or services (eg: most popular) ?

What percentage of domains bought did you sell quickly ? (there is probably little interest to keep something like cheyenneflowers.com if it does not sell right away)

@aramyus

There will be differences in price for cities like NewYork and Cheyenne, one is obviously the bigger market and the domain name is more valuable. But finding a buyer was more due to pure luck than anything else. Geo/Profession/Service played almost no role at all in my experience.

I sell maybe 1/3 of all the domains I register. I do not keep them for years unless I am sure it will sell one day. My strategy involves First offering the domain at my desired price, then a few weeks later I will offer it at 40% discount and then after this I will offer it at 80% discount. I find that even with the 80% discount I can still make some money and most importantly an upsale of some kind so its not all loss.

I sell in the sub $1000 region I am a "quick flipper" and only a very small % of my portfolio is for long term. Investors who do the waiting game and hold on to domains for years may well have different experiences to me.

That is exactly the way to go, especially when you are not able or willing to invest thousands. As you say, the waiting game can be played at the same time you create a consistent line of revenue by flipping names. The time may come when you do not need to flip as much as you do now, because you can afford to focus on more valuable names.

The fellow that mentioned Europe is correct. We own LondonPeriodontist.com -it may take a while to sell but in a city of 8million we have the name. That's just one example-the best GEO's imo are "city"real estate.com etc Hard to find but they are there-we just picked up a great one one Cape Cod. JacksonHoleRealEstate.com just sold for $85,000. PM me anytime if you'd like other examples we own that might help you. Good luck to you.
