Been doing some search with cities+tourismrelatedkeywords.

What I see, after doing a google search for that keyword, example New York Hotels is that the first page is cluttered with Adwords Ads and Google Place Results, giving minimum visibility to regular domain results.

This wasn't the case a couple of years ago.

I needed to know if such geo domains are still worth getting, when the first page results you are going to get are full of ads and google maps places.

i dont see the connection ? its the opposite really . when you see a lot of sponsor adds - that mean there is a healthy competition and high CPC .

of course targeting and brining to page number 1 a keyword like 'New York Hotels' wont be easy and actually kind of impossible for small player , still you can target a more easy - long tail keywords

imo - geo domains are always good investment and will always have demand .

Agree with difficulty for New York Hotels, but it was just an example of course.

But doesn't mean that the more ad cluttering you have for the keyword, meaning, when Adwords always takes the first chuck of space at the beginning and then the first and second regular result are from some tourism giant related site.....and then places, and finally you, the chances seem to be fewer of your site getting visited....

I'm not new to developing misc sites in different topics, but I have no idea when it comes to geo domains so....

Did you look into what Google Places is?

It's worth reading and might help you make your own decision :)

At most, the ads only take up the top three spots. But yes, when you search for geo terms often a map appears and listings on that map can take up much of the space. This will push down the organic listing which will include your site or domain, but generally you have a chance to appear there.

The nice thing about having so may local listings and ads appear is that if you have something worthwhile, you can clearly see many potential customers for your domain. Also the click prices for ads should be higher than if there are few listings and ads. So it's a trade off.

You convinced me. Gonna do more research.

Do you think there are still opportunities to develop these kind of sites. I'm not talking about giant portals, just small niches, that when thought of as a network can make it worth.

I don't see why not. I have about 1,200 parked domains and most of them get some traffic each month. The ones that have better optimization, that is they show people what they are looking for, are the ones that earn some money and do well.

i think any domain can be worth something and the better you optimize the site the more you can make.
