There has been a real craze about .mobi domains, but i am not sure if this extension will pick up. Am bit amazed by the way people are running after .mobi domains.

As there are many new extensions in place, i guess the overall competition will decrease a lot. There may be some big money sales in .mobi, (infact this will happen in many other extensions), but it is amazing the way .mobi is being sold.

Maybe some senior members at NP give some ideas about how these will become big success in years to come.

Am bit :-/ :-/ about how well these will do in next 2 years.

Have plans to register around 30 good domains and make websites for them, but am not very much sure about the value that will come in this extension.

P.S. We registered around 50 .in domains which seems to be very generic, but have not been able to sell them for any good price, so bit cautious this time.

.mobi and .in are two totally different things and can't even be compared beyond being a tld other than .com. It is good to be cautious. I suggest you browse the .mobi forums here for more thoughts on .mobi.

i completely agree that .mobi and .in are different. .in is limited extension for a country, while .mobi isn't limited to one country. i only presented it as a reason for me being cautious this time.

have read .mobi forums, but most are stories about auctions or to acquire some new domains

From a developer's point of view I think .mobi is needed. It would make my job a whole lot easier. The reason for this extension to exist is to make certain that ALL sites with the .mobi extension are mobile compliant and adhere to the guidelines set forth by TPTB at .mobi . IF .mobi enforces their own mobile compliant policy and people actually develop instead of just buy/sell domains then .mobi will succeed.

the mobi value will depend on how 3G/wireless network is developed. Once in the future the wireless bandwidth is largely increased, it may raise the value of mobi but maybe in that time dot com can still work very well in an mobile envirement.

a very valid point, but i guess even .com domains can offer access with sub domains like wap.mysite.com

Yes, and so can the .mobi. The .mobi can run the device detect and redirect as well. In fact, on the flip side, there can be full blown PC sites on the DotMobi - like universalchannel.mobi or hotclips.mobi. The advantage of a new business coming out in the dotmobi, and might not even have the dotcom, is that first mover dot mobi notoriety. Extra marketing effect.

Kind Regards,

Yelo
