I just saw this on digg and wanted some perspective. This guy wants to trade up his oneuglydomain.com for a more "beautiful" one worth $1 million. It's like that oneredpaperclip idea, but with domains.

My question is, does he have a chance or is this just a parody? I have a couple of dead domains I wouldn't mind trading for if I can feed off the publicity this might generate.

Thoughts?

How in the world do you trade Casino.rw for OnlineCasino.im!?

LBAB.com for NQT.us wasn't a smart deal either.

Looks like it's dead now, it did get quite a lot publicity at first though

True, although at the time LBAB.com was only worth about $80. :)

I don't get it, seems to me he makes some progress and than takes two steps backwards.

According to his website he currently owns MotorizedHome.com though IMHO the one he had several trades back in 2006 - celebrityaffairs.com is worth more.

This worked with the redpaperclip as they guy was trading for products he new was valued higher.

Domains are valued according to eventual end-user, he may see a nice domain, make the trade as he did with motorizedhome.com and then find out that everyone else thinks its lesser value.

Idea is doomed for failure in the domain industry.

I don't want to say anything bad but as it's been said before, OUD -- once promising -- looks like it's walking the way of the dinosaur :| After the LLL.net, it looked like Andres was going to prove everything wrong. Looks now like he has to prove us wrong again. I wonder if he'll succeed... or even do anything with the site again.

I own celebrityaffairs and it's
cool having a piece of history.
Even though the idea fizzled,
it was a neat attempt anyhow.

I wouldn't mind seeing OUD relaunched, although starting again (with a new crappydomain.com ;)). I think that this current idea has been really hurt by the huge periods of inactivity, although I wouldn't mind seeing a new OUD launched, with slightly (better) new rules etc :)

The idea was great and I believed it would work well at that time, mostly due to the high publicity. But seems like he took a break and eventually gave up.

Whoa, back from the dead. I think he would have done better if he didn't let people vote on the trades, lol.

I also noticed that, this guy clearly didn't know what he was doing!

Which is why it failed. :td:

So should we assume OUD is dead, as the majority seemed to believe it would have? Or can we say it's been dead for long now?

I missed the oneuglydomain project so much that I have decided to take it upon myself to revive it in an altered form!

It has launched as oneprettydomain.com and I have simplified the rules and process to hopefully keep things moving a bit quicker and easier this time.

Basically it will be a one week submission period, with a trade to be chosen (or not) at the end of the week. There will be no voting, as I believe trying to have the subjective process of choosing a domain through a voting process hurt the original project. The trade choices, bad or (hopefully) good, will all be on myself, with hopefully much discussion (as before) on the perceived merits or mistakes.

Only easily transferred domains (no restrictive country codes a la .ca or .us) from members of the forum will be considered.

At the end of 52 weeks, (and hopefully 52 trades), the final domain will either be sold or developed. We'll see how discussion goes on that.

I hope we can get back to having some fun with this, and see where it all ends up at the end of the 52 weeks. This project is all about promoting our industry, and raising awareness of this "unknown" and growing part of our modern economy!

The first domain offered is indeed a pretty one - Plentiful.net (enom - renewal feb 2009 - one word dictionary - 9 million google).

So check out oneprettydomain.com, for all of the rules, deadlines and other information.

I started a new thread about this as well ...

Cheers!

Sorry yes, the new site is: http://oneprettydomain.com/
No, there is no new site for Andres. OnePrettyDomain.com is not related to OUD and is owned by another person. Unfortunately, it looks dead too, IMHO. :|

OUD is dead? I'd feel like such a pretentious idiot to say "I told ya so!" lol Now I'm gonna have 300 noobs saying I single-handedly killed this project. Some fools never learn :(

Are you a stunning brunette (female), around 5'5", fit, smart (intelligent) around 120 to 130lb?

(If so, I'd think about it ;)

Actually Randy, I'd think most people who are familiar with OUD would say I was the one who killed the site. :( Andres, of course, is the one who made the real decisions, so I don't feel like it was completely my fault. I do feel kinda guilty about it though. :'(

BTW, I've sold both Casino.rw and LBAB.com on Sedo a few months ago. :guilty:

Just wondering but what did you get for them?

This is still going on? For all the time and effort that you've exhausted to get to this point, I would say that you bit off more than you can chew Andre! Buying and selling names at fair market prices as opposed to looking for unscrupulous trades could have made you much more IMO. Well, good luck anyway. Hope you do well.

If you would've taken the time to visit the OUD site or read a few posts above, you would know that OUD is indeed dead.
