While travelling on Tokyo’s circular loop train, the ‘Yamanote Line’ I saw an advertisement which featured a .mobi URL. It was interesting because I didn’t think that Japanese companies would use the .mobi extension.

The site was norikae.mobi which means to change trains in Japanese. I just checked the site on my mobile and they have various train and transportation information, including when the last train leaves. This is vital information in Tokyo where trains stop for about five hours at midnight. The site also has hotel and restaurant information.

It has given me new inspiration to start developing my own .mobi sites.

I remember reading somewhere, one of the reasons why .com domains are so successful, because every advertisement which features a .com domain is in a way promoting the .com TLD. It would be interesting to see companies promoting their .mobi URL. "

This is awesome news! I'm so happy you saw this on the train. Also, I have to comment on the fact that when I was in Tokyo a few years ago the trains worked like clockwork. They arrive and depart right on time. It's so much different from New York's trains and subways.

Great!. mobi does need more awarness. Actually, I though .mob is more popular in Europe, Asia and E. Asia comapred to here in US. I agree with you, development is the key to sucess for .mobi.

For the record, it wasn't me who saw this, hence the quotes. :)

this is an awesome post because I think most people are relating to their own small world and not thinking this is a GLOBAL extension !!! imo

Excellent find .. :)

I think I am going to setup a mobi news site, collect all these snippets of information about .mobi and keep them updated on develops.mobi.

Should be up by end of this evening hopefully :)

Fowards for me too and does not resolve in the .mobi emulator. Although, japanese phones may view it, dunno. I would like to see a picutre of the ad!

UPDATE

Just did a google search on it and only got one link (it is in Japanese):

http://domainfan.com/CS/forums/1373/ShowPost.aspx

I put the japanese into freetranslation and it came back with:

Jorudan manages "change and a/the guidance site". 《主語なし》I saw it with a/the train advertisement. 《主語なし》Changing it when I see it with carrying, although it only is flown in a/the company site, when I see it with PC the menu of searching appears.

《主語なし》It is the example that .mobi is used properly, although it only is being spent on forwarding in fact. 《主語なし》It may be such a pattern that Japanese who likes use altogether) although I go な in (ccTLD.

Yeah, it doesn't really seem like a mobile friendly site to begin with. Lots of graphics and images, even a video playing in the upper right corner. Not to mention the page width.

He claims that he saw the ad on the train as well.
On PC, it just takes you to the corporate site, but on mobile devices, it takes you to a train schedule site.
Aha!

So this is an example of what many people have been talking about, even before .Mobi entered the picture. We are seeing the website detect what type device the visitor is using, and then serving up the appropriate content for that user.

Very cool. :gl:
