End users are getting feisty!

So here are some quick profiles of end users that have made inquiries on domains I own/manage in 2015.

#1 - The extremely low ball offer from people who think domains are $50 USD
#2 - The person who refuses to make a first offer, or are very resistant to make the first offer; but will continue to eMail you for days.
#3 - Lots of inquires from India (analytics) - Domaining is flourishing there, hello friends!
#4 - People who eMail you for a 'price' and then never respond.

My favorite so far this year was a CEO from a startup who called me a B**** because I wouldn't sell him a name that I had personal development plans for; no price quote, no make an offer, just stonewalled.

Any colorful end user stories that you would like to share? What are your inquiries like in 2015?

"let me take that weight off your shoulders" (a jeweler says to an elderly lady wearing an heirloom gold necklace)

"please give me a prized domain for a school project" (a domain thief says to another domainer)

It's theft by deception... pitiful...

But my question is, why do these cheapos target good domain names? If you're a student on a cheap budget you should go after hand regs, or barely decent names that match your cheap budget.

That's because the whole family is recovering from the mental disorder and now they have to set up this project on your domain to teach people how to go through recovery process.

One guy asked to buy a domain for his daughter's anti-bullying school project. Of course wanted domain for reg-fee. I suggested he simply register a new name, as mine was for sale for $3.5k. He balked at this idea and was less than polite.

Subsequently he added my email address to his property training course list, which he was running on the .ca equivalent of my .com. I think it was $1,500 for a 2-day course.

He came back a couple of months later using different name and email address with another lowball offer... from the same IP. That name is most certainly on auto-renew now.

The games we all must play :)

this is a past sale but:

i got inquiry from same party for a few years and each time after negotiations failed, i raised the price.

finally, they gave in before another increase > 'coinweek.com'

so yeah, sometimes it is a game of strategy

Somebody should keep a list of 'buyer bargaining tactics'. Some of my favorites.

1) The previously mentioned 'school / personal project' pitch.
2) "I can register a new name for $10!!!" - so why don't you?
3) "You've owned the name for X amount of time and no one has bought it yet" - for a domain that wasn't even half a year old.
4) "I don't believe people should profit from selling domain names so..." - but you believe you have a right to make a profit with my domain name. Right.

EndUser: We're a non profit organization and your domain name is perfect for us. Is your domain for sale?
Me: That's cool you're in a non profit org and yes the domain is for sale since you contacted me through my sale page...
EndUser: What is the price of the domain?
Me: $1k
EndUser: Wow that's really high for a domain!!! We're a non profit org so are there any discounts?
Me: Sure, send me a copy of your 501c
EndUser: What is that???
Me: -_-

And what happens if they send you a copy of 501c? I guess the price will remain the same? :'(:D

What about this variant:
EndUser: Wow that's really high for a domain!!! We're a non profit org so are there any discounts?
Me: Look, the .org is still available

Domains are still undervalued items relative to their branding value. Companies spend thousands of dollars on all sorts of miscellaneous expenditures which they deem to be a cost of doing business. However, quite often when it comes to their business website, they will merely settle for a reg fee option even it is hyphenated, has confusing abbreviations (which they think are cool but are not recognized by those outside the business) or using extensions like .info or .biz. Offer them a better alternative but try to get a fair price to justify the value of your research and marketing effort and they think you are price gouging them. But you need some sales volume to pay renewals so there is pressure to sell cheap.

Almost the same happened with me, but worst becouse I even joined to the low ball game. Got a $100 offer, I countered $160 to cover the Sedo fee, and make pure $100, but negotiation was cancelled right after I countered back. Probably he was another domain investor, who thought he can spend 100 but not more.

But my question is, why do these cheapos target good domain names? If you're a student on a cheap budget you should go after hand regs, or barely decent names that match your cheap budget. but no, they go after high $xxx and low $x,xxx names when they only have $50. what can we do? say no and move along...i'm learning that knowing when to say no is critical in our industry.

why call domainers greedy when many people are already trying to buy our names for too cheap?

because more than likely, it was another domainer contacting you

:)

when an inquirer uses terms/phrases like "Exact Match" in context, then it's a 99.99993 % chance that it is another domainer.

An end user made contact today, pertaining to a short generic .COM of which he owned the matching ccTLD domain.

Got a really good sob story on how his business operates in the worst part of his region, and that he is a non profit.

The guy then caked on that he used to actually own the domain but is confused how it was no longer owned by him.

His offer: 0$ , just transfer him the domain.

:xf.rolleyes:

When in truth after doing some research, he was educated in the U.S. (at Princeton $$$) and has owned and sold several large media & entertainment companies in his region. He also has been in high positions in some very recognizable brands operating abroad. It also turns out that his business is not a non profit.

And the final truth of the matter... the domain had 1 owner previously from the 90's for over 16 years. And it wasn't Mr. Princeton.

End users in 2015 still acting like it's 2007. O.o

Contacted a prospect buyer who owned an extended version of the domain:

1st email they send: we used to own this domain and now your trying to sell it back to us?

2nd email: You must love your job. Stupid fxck.

Some people just can't fathom that domains are free game once they expire.
