Domain Uses GoDaddy Whois Info, But Doesn't Belong to GoDaddy (???)

I thought this was a very odd whois, but I queried my rep about purchasing the name (mostly out of curiosity because it looks a lot like blatant warehousing):

The whois is totally Go Daddy.

My rep told me that GD does NOT own the name, that it's spoofed information, but all links and whois lead back to Go Daddy.

He suggested that I file an invalid whois, so I did.

What do you make of this?

MORE INFO: the [email protected] has 651 domains attached to it:

MORE INFO: Some whois entries show WebReg RareNames as the registrant and admin name.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
might be someone using godaddy info instead of paying for whois privacy.

do you have a godaddy backorder that you could use on the name?

Yes, I have some old worthless backorders -- I just might place one for this domain.

At first, I thought GD was warehousing domains, but then I realized that they wouldn't be stupid enough to be so blatant.

BTW, I sent a query through the buydomains at Goddady dot com email addy. It hasn't bounced back yet.

Correct, but the registry will tell you the registrar. There is also a referal link to the whois server of the sponsoring registrar. The whois server may perfectly return inaccurate or deliberately misleading results, but the actual registrar cannot be concealed.

Well you can use Whoisology.com and I put in [email protected] Its shows over 550 domains.

NexBiz.com is a developed site but checking whois.sc it still show The Domain Aftermarket as the registrant.

SalesPush.com was another one which is a Go Daddy landing page.

InstaGallery.com was another one, it was developed and looks like registrant info has changed.

Nice whois tool -- thanks!

Another thought that comes to mind: a rogue Go Daddy employee could be at work. He/she would have to be fairly high up and/or have access to the email servers, though.

I'm NOT saying that this is the case -- just conjecture.

I'd fire one at the domain, just in case the domain is deleted.

The whois could be a result of someone wanting to save money by not paying for privacy, or it could be a glitch in their system (not automatically updating contact info after an auction win).

* this reminds me..... I need to buy a backorder because my auction membership is expiring.

Backorder switch: DONE!

I have established that buydomains [at] GoDaddy [dot].com is a live email (it could be a catch-all). I sent a query for one of the domains (not the one I backordered) listed on Whoisology and received this response:

Dear ,

The domain XXXXXXXXX.com is not for sale on our auction venue. If you are interested in purchasing the domain you may be interested in our Domain Buy Service.

If you have further questions or concerns please contact us.

Very odd, indeed. On the surface, it looks very clever; the domain owner routes queries to Go Daddy brokerage, but, then, the domain owner would never receive the queries...???

Any guesses here?

I received another email from buydomains [a] godaddy [dot] com, which may explain what's going on.

Dear ,

Thank you for your email. The address buydomains [at] Godaddy [dot] com is used in conjunction with our auction sales when moving a domain to a new owner. This domain was moved to the new owner with the request to update the public "who is" information. We have reached out to each new domain owner to request the information be updated multiple times however some fail to perform this request.

My takeaway from this: these 651 domains could be owned by 651 different customers, that this whois info is similar to Sedo's transfer account.

I'm assuming that this refers to public sales (non-Go Daddy seller to buyer) because the expiring and BIN names I buy arrive in my account with my info already listed (more or less).

It's probably intended to be a layer of protection for both seller and buyer.

Nothing nefarious here.

:)
