Domain Status - What's the point?

I keep getting mail-bombed with offers to buy the .com version of a domain that I already own. Since I did have a vague interest in the domain, I kept an eye on the domain status on ICANN, thinking that I might be able to pick it up after it drops.

The domain status was PendingDelete for about 2 weeks, and after this it changed into redemptionPeriod... what gives???

I thought it would be in PendingDelete for about 5 days, after which it drops?

Just count 75 days from expiration.

have noticed exactly the same phenomenon lately on some closely monitored GoDaddy registered domains and got a bit wiser after checking out the thread linked to by User timestamp above..
