I came here to do some research and to compare note.

I found this post:

"I 100% agree with Ms Domainer, if it reaches Pending Delete, it will drop on the 6th day after it enters Pending Delete Status. The Registrar can no longer recover the domain, and it's a free for all, for anyone to grab, including the OP." - https://www.namepros.com/threads/after-redemption.729619/#post-4183029

But I have found that in the last few weeks, GoDaddy is changing the status of domain names from PendingDelete to redemptionPeriod.

And the domain name is not dropping! :(

And GoDaddy keeps control of the domain name.

I thought that after PendingDelete, the domain name MUST drop!

Is this something new?

GoDaddyGoDaddy
I do not see 81 days, but it is definitely longer than I expected with the auction process.
The page says, "The domain name might not be available for renewal after day 42."
But they do not explain this, so this is the confusion point.

GoDaddy say the last day you can renew a domain is 42 days under their system. This varies from registrar to registrar. But in fact the Registry says you can renew up to 45 day. So there is a conundrum. If you ask GoDaddy to renew a domain between 43-45 days, they will say no and refer to their ToS. But if you give them a plausible explanation, or send them a letter from an attorney, they might just let you renew the domain. But it is entirely at their discretion, since you have agreed to their ToS (maybe a dozen times already).

Apart from their ToS, which you have agreed to, the most probable reason they will say no is because it has been sold in their Expiring or Closeout auctions. So they need a very good motivation, not to upset their auction winner. But it happens all the time to us auction buffs :(

@stub laid it all out there.
45-Day Grace Period, 30-Day Redemption Period, 5-Day Pending Delete period, then it is released and available for new registration. Remember, it can still be renewed by the registrar up until the Pending Delete stage.

I am humbled and grateful for your answers.
Thank you.
I seem to remember long ago that domains would "drop" be available for registration after 45 days, but maybe that was my imagination... Years ago.
I 100% understand what you are saying now.
I am still confused why they are reverts back to "redemptionperiod".
Best

Differences between Registrar & Registry Whois after expiry, .com/.net domains

Before expiry - Registrar & Registry whois are in sync.
After expiry up to 45 days - Registry adds 1 year to the expiry (because Registrar has paid them)
46 days - Registry removed the 1 year they added (because they have refunded the Registrar)
46 days - The domain is deleted from the Registrar's whois servers (might vary with some registrars)

So you have to be careful with the expiry dates of expired domains. If you are using a third party whois, you need to know from where are they getting their data. From the Registry or Registrar? Better to use the Registrar's whois servers in these cases.

Particularly when dealing with GoDaddy registered domains, since they have increasingly tried to make it hard for you to get anything from their whois records, without going to their website and entering a turing code.

This actually no longer true with GoDaddys.
Based on what I am seeing and what @stub is saying, GoDaddys domain names are not available for new registration after the 5 day pending delete period i.e. total of 45 days after expiration.
This is actually a change. It used to be like what you said, before GoDaddys introduced the auction process.
Right now Godaddys domains names are going from Pending Delete back to Redemption Period. I have seen even more examples of this strange behavior today.
But I understand now that GoDaddys wants to keep domain names longer in order to auction them for more and more moneys $$$. And they are using redemption period to break the process.
Good for them.
Bad for domainers.

@onlyme - It seems you haven't understood a word I've said. I try again.

stub said:
There are 3 more dates to expired domains which GoDaddy miss out

45 Days - The domain is returned to the Registry
75 Days - Goes into Pending Delete by the Registry
81 Days - Domain is dropped by the Registry

GoDaddy deletes the domain from their nameservers on day 45, but it is still registered at GoDaddy until it drops on day 81. After it has been deleted from GoDaddy's nameservers, the only person who can reactivate the domain is the original owner, who registered it at GoDaddy. GoDaddy cannot reactivate the domain and sell it to anyone else.

I've covered the phenomenon you are seeing already. You are completely misinterpreting what is happening. Please read my posts again. I feel like I'm experiencing, deja vu :(

Yes, you are right.
"registry redemption period" is what is going on.
No excuses except my English.
I get it and will stop now. :)
Thank you for patience.

Recently I caught a droppin domain in GD. After payment got message that this domain was previously/already registered and I will be refunded within 24hrs or so. I understand, that is very common.

But,
I saw that Name-drop time got postponed for 2 more days in dropping list!!
And, next day I got one more mail stating - Review your domain cancellation.

Now, is this too a common scenario!?

It's not unusual. It's because GoDaddy whois isn't looking up the Registry Whois is real time. If you use the Registry Whois, you would know for certain the status of the domain.

I'm not sure what you are asking here? Godaddy don't auction ANY dropping domains. They only auction off Pre-Release domains (domains less than 45 days after expiration). So when you say you caught a dropping domain, do you mean you waited for the Registry to drop the domain (81 days after expiry) and then you re-registered it at GoDaddy. Or do you mean you bid for a domain at GoDaddy's auctions?

So if the auction got reset by 2 days (that would be unusual), did you capture the domain eventually.

Of course if you tried to register a domain which hasn't dropped (81 days after expiry), and GoDaddy accepted your registration (because their whois is not in real time), then the messages you got would be absolutely normal.

I was also following a name that went from redemption to pending delete and back to redemption, never saw this glitch before

Exactly.. same happening on two GD registered domains that i am closely monitoring.. just never saw that "reverse" status change before either

Hi Stub,
Thanks for your time!!
1.It wasn't at auctions, I waited for the Registry to drop the domain (81 days after expiry) and then re-registered it at GoDaddy.
2.Then After payment got message that this domain was previously/already registered and I will be refunded within 24hrs or so.
3.That domain re-emerged in the Registry Dropping list, showing drop date after 2 days.
4.Next day I got one more mail from GD stating - Review your domain cancellation.
5. No, I could not reg that "Premium" domain this time n it went to some one else!!

Cheers!!

I'm not casting any doubt about what you say you saw @Nodws and @GravityEleven, but it is impossible for a domain under Registry Redemption Period to move to Pending Delete and then back to Registry Redemption Period. And even if this did happen, it wouldn't have been at the hands of the Registrar, because the domain record is in the hands of the Registry after 45 days (assuming .com domains).

The only time the Registrar could affect this would be if the current registrant paid the Redemption Fee and the Registrar redeemed the domain from the Registry. But the only time that could happen would be before the domain went into Pending Delete. Even if it was only a timing problem, the domain would not go back to Registry Redemption, but would go directly back to Registered.

What happened to the domains you saw this happen on? Did they then go back to Pending Delete (again) later on, or were they then Renewed. Do you have any screenshots?

GoDaddy changes their whois to a status that will help sell the dropping name.

Remember, it is under their full control for at least 75 days... and after 45 days, that is when the shady stuff begins!

Let's just say they wouldn't be interested in ethics.com

I don't believe you can grow as big as GoDaddy based on unethical principles. There has to be a good core, even if there might be some judgemental stuff on the periphery.

I watched CEOISM.com go through expiration in GoDaddy a couple weeks ago. It went through the Buy It Now down to $5. I don't believe anyone bought it.

Now I just checked and it is back in a 90-day auction with a minimum bid of $250:
There are known glitches with GoDaddy auctions where a domain can remain listed when it shouldn't be there (of course, the same is true for Sedo). I would guess that the previous owner of that domain had it listed, the domain expired, went through TDNAM expiring auction/closeout unsold and then because it was previously listed, the GD system renewed the listing.

It wouldn't make much sense for GoDaddy to have it at $5 closeout and then purposely re-list it at $250 minimum offer.
