analysis Domain Name Sales Reported At NameBio During First Six Months Of 2025: Strength for Legacy Extensions, .AI, .IO, .XYZ, .CO...

Spaceship Spaceship
The first six months of 2025 produced 93,100 NameBio-listed domain sales, with a total reported dollar volume of just over $122 million. This represents an increase of 42.7% in dollar volume compared to the same six months of 2024. It is the strongest showing from the seven analyses in this series, although changes in reporting may account for part of the increase.

In this article, I use the same procedure I have since 2019, including all sales in the Namebio main database for the first six months of each year. NameBio-listed sales are a combination of wholesale acquisitions and retail sales. While the number of sales is dominated by wholesale transactions, the total sales dollar volume, used in this analysis, while representing a mix, is strongly influenced by high-value retail sales. I consider total dollar volume to be a good indicator of overall domain name market health.

Many sales are not reported in NameBio, so the entire domain name aftermarket is substantially higher. The venues reported in NameBio have changed over the years, so it is important to keep that in mind when viewing apparent trends.

While keeping the above in mind, for many extensions, especially .com, .net and .org, and .ai, along with various other country code extensions, the first half of 2025 has been a superb period in aftermarket domain name sales in many extensions.

I want to acknowledge Namebio at the outset. The article you are reading is only possible because of NameBio. Their interface makes it easy to analyze sales data in different ways. As individual investors, we depend on NameBio when researching and pricing names. While there are caveats to consider, see notes at end, when using NameBio data to study trends, nonetheless it is the most reliable resource we have. Shoutout to @Michael for his diligence and professionalism in maintaining and expanding this valuable resource.

The Legacy Big Three

Let’s first look at the legacy big three extensions, .com, .net and .org. The first half of 2025 was the strongest in any year since this series began, up 44.9% in dollar volume from the same six months of 2024.
Image-Legacy3-2025.jpg

Country Code Domains As A Whole

Country code domain names taken as a whole did even better, up 51.8% from same period in 2024[/b]. The dollar volume over the six month period was more than $18.4 million. As we will see, a big chunk of that was due to .ai alone, but a number of country code extensions have started 2025 very strong.
Image-All-Country-2025.jpg

New Extensions Combined

Things were muted in the first half of 2025 for most new domain name extensions. Taken as a whole, new extension sales were down 33.9% in dollar volume compared to the first six months of 2024. The just over $2.3 million in reported new extension aftermarket dollar volume was still higher than the same period in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023.

Analysis Procedure: Compiling A List To Check

Below, I present, in decreasing dollar volume order, data for the top-selling extensions. In order to compile a list of extensions to check, I started with last year’s top performers, and then added TLDs from various lists. I also went through the top 200 individual country code sales for 2025, and the top 200 new extension sales, and added to my check list any extension on an individual sale from either list. I checked sales data for 126 extensions, but it is possible I have missed an extension that might have made the lower part of this list. Readers should feel free to ask in the comments about extensions that they thought would have made the list.

1. .COM $91.4 Million

The dollar volume in .com alone was about $91.4 million, up 46% from the same period in 2024.
Image-COM-2025.jpg

The .com extension continues to represent roughly three-quarters of the reported domain name aftermarket. In the first six months of 2025, .com accounted for 74.9% of all sales by dollar volume, up slightly from the first half of 2024, although down modestly from earlier years. The big 3 legacy TLDs represented 82.7% of sales dollar volume during the first half of 2025.
Image-Pie-2025.jpg

As the graphic shows, one extension continues to dominate the aftermarket. In the graph I include individually the top 8 performing TLDs, and use the ‘others’ sections the combined impact of other extensions. For example, ‘Other Country Codes’ means all except for .ai, .io, .co, .de, and .co.uk. The tiny ‘Others’ section is for sales in .info, .biz, .pro and a few other extensions.

2. .AI $10.5 Million

The second highest performer in the first half of 2025 was .ai, with just under $10.5 million in reported sales during the six month period, an increase of 89.1% from the same period in 2024. The trend over the seven year period is shown below.

Image-AI-2025.jpg

3. .ORG $7.6 Million

The aftermarket dollar volume for .org has continued to grow year by year. When we look at the first half of 2025, dollar volume in .org up 51.7% from the previous year, at about $7.6 million.

The seven year patten (for the first half of each year) is shown below. Keep in mind that different graphs have different axis scales.
Image-ORG-2025.jpg

4. .NET $1.9 Million

The .net extension moved up one place, to fourth, with just over $1.9 million in dollar volume in 2025, up 22.4%. Here is the seven-year pattern.
Image-NET-2025.jpg

The gap between .org and .net sales volume keeps growing each year.

5. .DE $1.2 Million

Although the dollar volume was down 5.9% from the same period in 2024, Germany’s .de extension managed to move up one place in the standings, with a six-month 2025 sales volume equivalent to just under $1.2 million. With Sedo a strong performer in Europe, and Sedo sales of $2000 and up listed on NameBio, European national extensions probably get a boost in the standings.

6. .IO $1.16 Million

The .io extension dropped a couple of places, but still represented just over $1.16 million in reported aftermarket dollar volume during the six months. That was down 34.5% from the same period in 2024. Here is the seven year pattern.
Image-IO-2025.jpg

7. .XYZ $998,000

The .xyz extension continued in seventh place, although the dollar volume, just shy of $998,000, was down 20.1% from 2024. The seven year pattern is given below for perspective.
Image-XYZ-2025.jpg

8. .CO $844,000

The .co extension had a substantial uptick in reported aftermarket sales volume when compared to the start of 2024, more than doubling. The extension moved up one place in the standings. The six month 2025 .co dollar volume was just under $844,000. While that is less than the first half of 2021, it is higher than any other.
Image-CO-2025.jpg

9. .CO.UK $691,000

The United Kingdom’s .co.uk increased more than 4x from the same period of 2024, and the dollar volume just shy of the equivalent of $691,000 moved the extension into the top 10. Sales of the .uk extension would add another $54,000 to this total.

10. .EU $369,000

Europe’s .eu managed to move up one place to position 10, with a dollar volume of just under the equivalent of $369,000. That corresponded to a 19.7% increase from the first half of 2024. Note that there is a big difference in dollar volume between ninth and tenth place.

11. .NL $339,000

Many European national extensions did well in 2025, with the Netherland’s .nl up more than 148% to just above the equivalent of $339,000 USD, and eleventh place. It is an impressive showing for a country with a population of about 18 million.

12. .TV $294,000

The repurposed .tv country code, assigned to the Pacific island nation Tuvalu, has been strong for many years for television, video and media. During the first six months of 2025, the dollar volume was just shy of $294,000, up 53.5% from the same period in 2024.

13. .FR $289,000

France’s .fr was up 93% to a reported aftermarket dollar volume just over $289,000.

14. .CC $283,000

This repurposed country code extension, originally assigned to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, produced just under $283,000 in NameBio-reported sales over the six month period in 2025. That is down 12.2%, but enough for fourteenth place. The majority, although by no means all, of .cc aftermarket sales were in numeric domain names.

15. .ES $277,000

Spain’s .es extension had just under $277,000 in reported sales over the first six months of 2025, approximately tripling the dollar volume reported for the similar period of 2024.

16. .APP $223,000

After .xyz, the second highest performing new extension was .app, with a dollar volume of just under $223,000, down slightly,1.6%, from the same period the previous year.

17. .INFO $202,000

The .info extension doesn’t get a lot of discussion any more, but with almost $202,000 in dollar volume during the first six months of 2025, it is a top 20 extension. Compared to the same period in 2024, that sales volume was up about 73%.

18. .US $190,000

The United States .us domain extension was up 23.8%, to just under $190,000 in reported aftermarket sales during the first six months of 2025.

19. .IT $190,000

Italy’s .it has started 2025 strong, up about 160% to $165,000 for the six month period.

20.(tie) .IN $140,000

India’s .in extension cracked the top 20 extensions, at just under $140,000, although that is down 16.1% from the same period in 2024.

20.(tie) .VC $140,000

The .vc extension is often used for venture capital. With almost $140,000 in reported aftermarket dollar volume during the first six months of 2025 it made the top 20 list, although dollar volume was down 7.6% when compared to the same period in 2024.

Others Above $100,000

Here are other extensions that managed at least $100,000 in dollar volume during the first six months of 2025:
  • .ch The Swiss extension managed $129,000 in reported aftermarket dollar volume.
  • The repurposed .id extension is showing strong growth, up more than 3x from the same period in 2024, to a dollar volume of just more than $120,000 during the first six months of 2025.
  • Another strong European country code was .be, of Belgium. During the first six months of 2025, about $116,000 in dollar volume.
  • .me is no longer as strong as in the past, but there was just under $109,000 in reported aftermarket dollar volume during the first half of 2025. That was modestly up, 14%, from the same period in 2024.
It is possible there were some extensions with more than $100,000 that I overlooked including in the analysis.

A Few To Watch

Here are comments on a few extensions not otherwise reported in this article:
  • .art is a new extension to watch, with a dollar volume of just more than $88,000 during the first six months of 2025, although that was down from the same period in 2024.
  • Austria’s .at had a reported dollar volume of $97,000 during the first half of 2025.
  • .bet was a surprise entry in the 2024 Top 10 list. It pulled back substantially in total dollar volume in the first six months of 2025, even though a larger number of reported sales. At a reported 2025 dollar volume of more than $94,000, remains an extension to watch.
  • While one might expect .bot to benefit from the artificial intelligence surge, in the first six months of 2025 the dollar volume was just under $21,000, that is down more than 40% from the same period in 2024.
  • Usually Canada’s .ca, restricted to those with a Canadian presence, makes this list. In the first six months of 2025, reported aftermarket dollar volume in .ca was down to just under $49,000, a drop of more than 75% from the same period in 2024.
  • I had not previously tracked the new extension .capital, but in the first have of 2025 there was more than $42,000 in reported aftermarket dollar volume. Those who invest in new extensions may want to keep a watch on this extension.
  • .club is not at the level of a few years ago, but more than $24,000 in NameBio-reported sales during the first half of 2025.
  • Probably sales of .cn are seriously unreported on NameBio. In the first six months of 2025, the reported dollar volume was about $69,000, more than tripling from the previous year.
  • The .dev extension is finding increasing application. It had a reported sales volume of just over $54,000 during the first half of 2025, representing an increase by a factor of just under 7x.
  • Finland’s .fi was up from the preceding year to almost $65,000 during the first six months of 2025. As well as for its country, the extension is used for finance and fintech.
  • After not having an impressive sales record through much of its life, the .fun extension has had a number of strong sales of late. During the first six months of 2025 the sales volume was almost $59,000.
  • Sales in the repurposed .gg extension, primarily to gaming companies and organizations, has always been variable. The first six months of 2025 saw just over $42,000 in dollar volume, down 67%.
  • The .news extension had a reported aftermarket dollar volume of just more than $21,000 during the first half of 2025.
  • A number of investors have bet on the .now extension. It is still early days, but .now saw just over $26,000 in dollar volume reported on NameBio during this reporting period. In addition, a 5-figure sale was added on NameBio just after the numbers were set for this analysis.
  • The legacy .pro extension is not discussed a lot, but it had a respectable more than $46,000 in reported aftermarket dollar volume so far in 2025.
  • Much talk on NamePros about .si, possibly for use in SuperIntelligence, but not yet much change in the aftermarket sales record for the extension. During the first six months of 2025, there was a reported aftermarket dollar volume of just over $14,000, down slightly from the same period in 2024.
  • Somalia’s .so extension is finding a place for tech startups. Sales in the extension strengthened part way through 2024, and continued strong in the first six months of 2025, with almost $66,000 in dollar volume recorded in NameBio.
  • There were a number of strong sales in .trade reported during the first six months of 2025, combining for about $36,000 in sales volume.
  • The .win is finding a bit of traction, with a dollar volume of almost $26,000 during the first six months of 2025.
  • .work may be an extension to keep on the radar, with just over $29,000 in sales volume so far in 2025.
  • .world performed similarly, with just under $21,000 in dollar volume over the six months.
Notes

I want to stress that this is a comparison of sales from the first six months of each year only. Economic and world events can have serious impacts in a short period of time. I do a similar analysis, published in the NamePros Blog, at the end of each year, comparing full-year results.

Remember that most retail sales are not reported in NameBio. It is not clear if there are significant differences between extensions in the fraction of sales that are reported in NameBio.

Over the years, what gets reported in NameBio has changed. They now pick up sales data not specifically submitted, and which venues report, and the importance of different marketplaces, has changed over the years. That impacts the data, perhaps strongly.

As for previous reports in this series, I collected the data right at the end of the six month period. That means sales reported later, but that occurred during the six month period, will not have been included. Therefore, you may find slightly different data if you later check NameBio. Since I was consistent in previous reports, there should not be a systematic bias.

Past Years

This is analysis is part of a series looking at reported sales from the first six months of the year. Here are links to the previous articles:

Updates:
July 2, 2025 The .dev extension had been analyzed by omitted by mistake from the writeup. It is now included.
July 5, 2025 Added a graph showing the trend in the .co extension.

Deep thanks to Namebio, for providing this valuable resource of domain name sales data. It is their data that makes analyses like these possible. As I mentioned earlier, this article would not exist without NameBio. Thank you so much, @Michael.

.com is king for a reason!

Despite the fact that .ai sales is fiery hot right now, .com sales is still about 9X that of .ai and miles ahead of other extensions.

Even though .net sales rose in 2025, it seems like the tld really sucks. I rarely see a net newly bought and developed any more. When I look at tlds for sale for a keyword, the .net is often a very small fraction of the price of the .com and others, and it's just sitting there unsold. Or, the .net is not even taken. I see juicy .net's I can buy for reg fee or under a few hundred dollars, but I just skip them.

Two extensions not mentioned in which I've seen an increase in (unreported) sales from our portfolio:

.dev
.ag

Things are percolating with end users in these two extensions.

Thank you for this. I had analyzed the .dev extension and was sure that I had included in writeup, but seems missing. I have now updated the article. I agree that there is a lot of recent momentum in the extension, in fact the sales volume from first half of 2025 is roughly 7x what it was in the previous year.

Regarding .ag, there are just 5 sales reported during the first half of 2025, a dollar volume less than $10,000 in total, so had not made the cut for inclusion. There may, of course, be sales being announced but not getting into NameBio.

Thanks once more, and my apologies for somehow missing the .dev that had been fully intended to be part of the article. At a volume of about $54,000 it is easily within the extensions to be included in the final part.

I know little about the extension. I believe it is sometimes used related to agriculture. Not sure if anyone sees agent possibilities???

A few of the larger historical sales are domain hacks, although also simply single letter sales. Like T.ag, M.ag and Z.ag.

.ai went up to $11.1 million
Thanks. Although that amazing sale (NameBio date July 2) is not within the period reported here, but will be in the full year report!

Thank you for this post; it’s incredibly helpful for a beginner like me. Recently, I discovered that .me extension has been gaining interest among domainers.

Regarding this:

20.(tie) .IN $140,000

India’s .in extension cracked the top 20 extensions, at just under $140,000, although that is down 16.1% from the same period in 2024.

Can i respectfully say that i actually have records of .IN end user sales during 1st half of this year totaling $157K+?

i have more complete sales data on .IN than Namebio (all respect to Namebio, but starting from last year when i started tracking .IN sales, this is true).

.CC

Lowest views in my ATOM portfolio.

.XYZ
.SE
.ART
.PRO
.NET
.FOOD
.CZ
.MIAMI

Slight clarification

I listed .ART, .NET, .CZ, .PRO first on SEDO. When these domains were listed on SEDO I had considerably higher views on a regular basis.

I just purchased .MIAMI a week ago so this might not be a fair assessment of its popularity.

.CX has shot up in views in the shortest timeframe in comparison of all extensions in my ATOM portfolio.

.SE is the only 10.0 domain score in my entire ATOM portfolio.

-------------------------------------------------------

Highest views on SAW.

.AI
.ORG
.COM

.AI on SAW has the highest price evaluation out of my entire SAW portfolio.

I only have .AI, .ORG, and .COM listed on SAW.

I always have much higher views on SEDO when I'm pointed there and have come to find out their traffic is just wrong now that I've set up the names on NP lander with GA4.

Interesting on SAW though. I have never listed there but may list my .ai port

Thank you for the information. I have no doubt that there are many additional .in sales to those reported in NameBio, since such a large market and strong and rapidly growing economy. As the article mentions, probably national country codes are in particular underrepresented in NameBio data.

For analysis purposes. I think it is essential to use a cohesive body of domain name sales data, consistent over the years, and that makes an effort at least to remove sales that turn out to be not accurate, or sales where the sale is an uncompleted monthly plan or something other than simply a domain name sale.

I urge all sellers to report their own sales to NameBio using the simple form:
https://namebio.com/report

It just takes a minute, and inclusion of at least one piece of documentation. We all benefit when sales are reported to NameBio.

Thanks again for the information that you added.
