I found the domain runningnow.com and it was available to register for $11.99. I go to the GoDaddy and Esti domain appraisal sites and find that the domain is valued at $3k. I proceed to register the domain only to find that it has been registered. I check the Whois records and the Whois was updated at essentially the exact moment that I used one of the appraisal services. Are there bots connected to those services that automatically register any open domains with appaisals above a certain $ amount? I feel like someone stole a good oppurtunity from me and want to know if anyone else has had this happen to them. Please share.

With godaddy it happens, their official reply is always "coincidence"

    no not bots,
if it's being done, that's the type of :poop: that human beings would do

I advise not to use appraisal sites as a decision maker for registering domain names.

    imo….

I second that. I haven't seen estibot give more than a reg fee estimate if the domain is available at reg fee anyways. Maybe that's changed.

Automated appraisal tools are more to help the registrar than the registrant.

But runningnow.com is in redemption period (reg'd in 2004), so this would not be a case of someone snatching it from you because you searched it. You will have to wait until it becomes available. May go to auction first though.

Thanks for the response. I saw something about the redemption period but wasn't sure what that meant. Perhaps it was an issue with the GoDaddy system because it definitely said it was available for like $17.99, which is why I checked its appraised value.

You occasionally do get certain domains showing as available then you go to cart and they're not there. Then you search for the same name again and it shows not available. It's not that someone is watching your searches and reg's your names. It's a bug in the system.

according to posts by other members, such instances you mentioned have happened many times in the past at GD,

best to check availability of unregistered domains at another registrar first, like dynadot

    imo...

Once I registered a really good domain in an ngTLD that went through at 101Domain. I even got the registration confirmation email. But the domain did not appear in my account. The next day I got an email that the domain I registered was being held back by the registry in accordance with an ICANN regulation. Even though it appeared to go through the registration process. I don't know who is more to blame for that blunder, the registrar or the registry.

Just an error if you saw somewhere saying the domain was available. It's been registered since 2004...although in redemptionperiod so it may not get renewed and instead be auctioned off (whether prerelease or a pending delete dropcatch style auction).

I have seen front running many times don't use bots until you own the domain and don't do checks basically unless your going to buy domains there and then.
