Since I started to read this forum I really began to research. Think somewhat differently than earlier. I guess it´s a normal process among many domain guys. I have read and read, articles here and there and everywhere. Grabbing all information and at the same time I also began realizing things that I haven´t read about (yet). I felt as if I had become a little bit smarter. In the last week or so, it feels as if I see this domain world as one gigantic area. Almost feeling scared to realize the potentials. The economic possibilities.
This summer I have studied different things, one by one and not until later it feels as if they can sum up together and things get a bit more clear.

I sometimes see patterns between this and other things, like music (I have produced!), colors and shapes.

I thought about no dedicated seo area here on this forum, or is it? Like many others, I looked at seo as being something technical though it´s not. It´s quite logical though but in a natural sense, and it´s not only about keywords. I read someone wrote that seo is art. Finding domain names can be art. If people like the names they will see them and remember them. Which one of these look
more devoting and interseting:

freemusicdownloads.xxx (very high "OVT")
free............... .xxx ( Zero "OVT" )

Now I took that second name away because I found it was free. This situation, me writing here made me invent a very nice name.

That is funny, I would never have come up with that name if I didn´t start to write here. Which means that I, and probably we all, have mental blockings that open up occasionally.

In the last weeks I have done studies, perhaps a little too much too know which names I will reg. I have waited to reg. Today I made a list to be regged. I have hundreds and hundreds of names, and many good ones but I can only pick what I think is the top ones. It has been boring because I have more been into researching occurrence etc and with several aspects that I have checked. Kind of technical only.

I found out today that the good thing about the .coms being hard to find available is that it challenges your creativity, and I like that. I only regged .coms in the beginning. If I wouldn´t I guess my domains may had been more close to OVT but also more boring.

Names can indeed be art, not just keywords, in a way it was more funnier in the beginning when I made names without less or no keyword this and that. Some of those first names relate quite well to keywords anyway.

But it mustn´t become an addiction, the creative needs!

I don't know if I've become smarter through my domain experience. I have learned a few things, though.

1) A person can build up a nice portfolio of domains with very little cash outlay. There are so many resources these days that reward you for your membership or input (parking companies, helium.com, Namepros, etc...) that one can pay for a decent portion of their domaining with revenue from those sources. It's also fairly easy, when getting started, to turn around domains for a nice profit (doubling or tripling your reg fee), so you can quickly build up a reserve for higher priced names or renewals.

2) Getting offers on domains is only the first part of the sales process. I've learned that it's necessary to accomodate the customer in order to achieve the final goal. For instance, I have an offer on one domain, which I've accepted, but the buyer says his wife is in the hospital, and he's too busy to complete the deal (i.e. send payment). Rather than sending emails or making phone calls every day, I've backed off for now. I know there is a decent chance I'll lose the sale, but I wouldn't want someone contacting me about domaining if my wife was in the same situation.

3) Domaining is about more than money (to me). I enjoy the challenge and creativity involved.

4) I've learned not to get discouraged in the lean times. I set myself a method for growing my portfolio, and I stick to the plan.

As far as being a much smarter domainer, NamePros without a doubt, Has made me that.

I am somewhat like "Yandig" , when it comes to domaining, Domaining is about more than money to me aswell, I really enjoy it, More as a hobby than anything. I like to build and enjoy my portfolio, I do not really enjoy selling my domains, I most usually only sell any of my names, If there is a purpose for me to do so, And it is most usually to fund another project that i would like to do pertaining to domaining. I wasn't this same way a few years ago, I would buy to resale, To make a few dollars domaining. I guess i have settled into, what fits me best as domainer now, Pure enjoyment with my domains i own.

Everything in life is linked together.. In college I took an Early English Lit class (800's-1600's, somewhere in there). I skipped pretty much all of the classes... I read about 5 of the 2,000 pages of required reading... Yet when the Final came around, I got a B+ (thank god it was completely comprised of 3 essay questions).. Was I sucking knowledge out of the kid next to me in a vampiric fashion while taking the exam? That would be awesome, but sadly no... I just love history and I just happened to take an introduction to economics class the previous year (Marx, Weber, all that good stuff). So how does history and economics relate to english lit? Well, once you know the history and economics of that era, it's really not hard to figure out what the writers of the time would have cared about, been influenced by, worried about, etc... and ultimately write about.

Domaining is basically the same deal. You start to learn one aspect and it opens your mind to others. You may find yourself setting out to learn something new and find that you already have the basic concepts down, due to your other experiences. Pretty soon you start to weave a big picture together and it all makes perfect sense.

Critical thinking and/or luck are probably the 2 best tools a person can have for success :)

no one mentioned this yet, but i also enjoy the development and maintenance of websites in addition to the domaining. nice to see traffic coming to your sites from search engines and owning a piece of the web!
