Contacted by an acquisition company

I was contacted by a company specializing in acquiring assets for other companies. Domains, patents, trademarks, etc...

Their "final offer" is mid-high $x,xxx, which I am not comfortable with.

It seems like they could have contacted me directly if their max really is four figures. Why hire someone to negotiate that? Is this normal or am I being worked over? I just have a feeling I'm going to hear from them again next month saying they came up with more money to offer (something they already claimed between offer #1 and #2 like two days later).

Anyone ever deal with these types of guys?

There is too much information missing to give much advice. Is the domain realistically worth more than Mid - High $X,XXX in your opinion?

I have dealt with several acquisition companies in the past. I dealt with one that offered $500 for a domain and would not budge. This was a product related .COM worth Mid $XX,XXX

Another domain was sold through an intermediary. The buyer turned out to be Elton John's company.

There are any number of reasons a buyer would use an acquisition company.

I would counter offer with the price you are comfortable with. They approached you and the ball is in your court. Also ask them who they are representing (buyer).

I would help better if you reveal more information. Though offer them low $x,xxx to proceed.

Op is not happy with mid to high $xxxx and you want the op to go even lower. Read the post before posting.

yeah read this:
http://www.inc.com/guides/2010/04/tips-for-great-negotiating.html

key word segment: walk away aka the 'f**k you" tactic :) i wouldn't say that though. you could lie and say you have another guy looking at it right now and will hve to get back later.

if you want $10,000 for the domain, throw $13750

always throw like +3k over what you expect and they will meet you right where you want, the sweet spot.

They are trying to get the best possible commission for themselves, I was offered $110 for a domain that I knew was worth low $x,xxx, they really did their best to convince me they knew better, ended up getting the low $x,xxx from a different company a few days later.

I've dealt with acquisition companies before. They are often in place to protect the future plans of their clients. Could be legit, could be good to shoot high, but as bmugford states, too little information to say for sure.

This is so true. Had a company contact me and tried to convince me I needed an appraisal for a domain they wanted to buy. When I didn't go with the appraisal co. they suggested, they were gone.

Appraisal scams are so lame... In regards to the topic. Squeeze them hard! Good Luck!

Definitely not the appraisal scam or anything bad.

No more offers yet. Even though I didn't accept their "final" offer, certain events have taken place that lead me to believe I haven't heard the last of them. Vague, I know. I'll update the thread as soon as it is safe to do so (ideally after a sale).
