Hi all,

:hi:

I have been contacted by a huge corporation which holds a arguable monopoly in the world in the field of computers and related operating systems.

I have a domain name which is a .com extension which they are seeking and have effectively tried to reach my number atleast 2 times now. I do not want to name the domain name in general intrest of the deal but just wanted to know how much should I ask for the domain name assuming that the company is very very very huge and they want to deal straight away.....

Lets us say if the domain was windows.com and the company was microsoft....just an example

there is no trademark issue as the company has not launched the product relating to the name and I am still running a nice site which receives decent 1000 uniques a day....

Derisory, imho. I'd keep it and look forward to the increased traffic for your already developed website.

think about it very carefully.

Do you think there will be another buyer for the name willing to offer your desired price? Is it that generic?
Can you monetize it well instead? The owner of Cricket.com just turned down a $6million offer because he can monetize it and get much more.

Take these factors into consideration. Don't think that because a company is rich, they HAVE to pay x,xxx, xxx for a domain name. It all ties into their product strategy with the name.
Exactly, it's like someone else said, if you were selling your house for $150,000 and came to find out an interested party was a billionaire, would you raise the price to $700,000?

I would have a guess that the company is Microsoft???

Because they bought and developed zune.net? A pattern of behavior? Because they're big in computers and operations systems? Good guess :)

The only other candidates might have been IBM, Apple or Sun, maybe.

If company X is investing heavily in this project, they may be more inclined to raise the ante if they knew that one of their competitors is interested in acquiring the domain.

Heck depending on how generic the keyword domain is, even a potential competitor may be interested in shelling out more $$ for it.

It is ok to ask more for a domain name if buyer is a multi-billion corporation.
What about iReport.com??? don't just say it is worth 750k just for the name, sure it went for that much only because CNN wanted it!

I would advise to sell no cheaper than 100k, if they launch a product of that name you'll see a lot of traffic, just should be careful not to use it in any way that could be considered "bad feith" ;)

Do Microsoft own Zune.com now? I thought the owner didn't want to sell to Microsoft cheap? :|

First off, the cited real estate analogy is a terrible one

In general:

1/ Domains have utility that can vary a great deal depending on the end user.
Zune, com was not worth that much until MS decided to name their product

Appraisals are not worth the cyber paper they are written on

Not all domains are listed "For sale" in which inquiries are made.
In contrast it is rare for inquiries to be made on properties that are not listed for sale.

2/ Real estate is more fungible eg pricing of units in a condo block/houses next to each another are somewhat comparable in price and will not vary greatly for similar sized properties
In short, a seller could not get away with asking, say, double the price of the identical next door condo unit.
It wouldn't sell - market forces wouldn't allow it.

Appraisals are accepted by lenders, govt, buyers and sellers

Intuitively, domain holders know this is the case - why else would they bother trying to google the inquirer's details if not to gauge the size of their pockets ?

They can and they do, may be not right away though. My gf fancied buying a property in a certain area and prices doubled in a year or 2.

I guess the same way domain values rise. :)

You missed the point

GENERALLY, if 2 similar units in a block or similar houses next to one another are both on the market TODAY, no-one rational other than an eccentric will pay double the price of the other

In short, seller would not succeed in selling it at the inflated price - and would eventually have to lower to a more realistic price in order to sell.

Good luck

sorry I am reading namepros.mobi and came straight to the last page, wasn't aware of all the developments so you can disregard my comment above. But what was their ground for the lawsuit they'd threatened you with?

(below my original post just for the archives)
(I'd probably say its not for sale and wait for them to make the opening move. If they did for 11k, its got to be a lowball offer.

But I would give this to a hard core pro broker, say phone monty @ moniker or someone and let them handle it and give them their cut. It sounds like you could be sitting on a million dollar domain. I hope its with a safe registrar, locked and renewed for 20 years...

You are probably in no hurry, time is on your side, wait and see how things develop??)
