Recently, I bought the domain name christophermcbride.com. This might sound like a stupid thing to say, but what do I do now, and how do I go about updating it?

First off, you need to get web hosting for your domain, go and browse the web hosting offers forum here. Than, you would point your domains name servers (you can find out how to do this at your registar) to the name servers provided by your host. Finally, get the FTP info from your web host and you can start updating your site
