I was looking through the sales threads today, and while there are the usual close to worthless names (anyone who says they are having a "clearout" really means they are trying to sell their garbage), I noticed that there are some serious bargains. I think people are mistakenly valuing their names based on the fact that no one buys it the first time through..."if its listed for $50 and no one bites, it must be worth less than that so I'll lower it"

Instead, I think there are just fewer buyers in this economy, and you may end up selling a $100 name for $20 through these false assumptions.

One telltale sign - have you noticed who is selling? Many buyers are turning to sellers - many of the vets have more names for sale than ever.

While I was looking for something specific, had I set out with money I could have had good names cheap.

Thoughts?

Some people think that every name is worth $50+ and thats why they dont sell. As far as finding bargins dont tell anyone that around here LOL;).

As for vets selling its prolly because they want to go to these:
Domain Roundtable 2008
San Francisco, California
April 18-20 2008

Web 2.0 Expo
San Francisco, California
April 22-25 2008

T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East
Orlando, Florida
May 20-24 2008

or they are trying to sell their lower quality names off to make some investments on deals that are going on right now. Which there are plenty of them right now.

Very good point about the conferences...and the overvaluing people do. Its still scary to see here and elsewhere some of the big holders start to sell, and even good names get reduced to almost nothing...

While many of the names are sub par, the vast majority of the buyers, are only willing to pay sub par prices for domains these days. It is a buyers market right now, with the flooded market of domains for sale.

It is a great time buy, a horrible time to sell, Imo, I have been buying for the last year, at nearly wholesale pricing, I am enjoying getting my names so cheap, But i very rarely buy from here, for what i can buy my names for else where, they are expensive here, Imo.

because i rarely sell any of my domains, the current market is perfect for me, nice and flooded, with domains selling at 1/4 their true value.

I have been honestly thinking about selling some of my holds off to buy some other investments but have not seen the pros over weigh the cons at this point. Honestly now is the time to buy.

I agree fully with --> "Now is the time to buy" , it truly is. Lots of hidden gems, just have to have the eye for it.

I would try offering what you're willing to pay via PM - I've done that elsewhere and the cool thing is that when the thread gets indexed it looks like you paid more than you did - helps resale.

While some of the points raised are good ones, I think it is quite arrogant to call clear out sale names "garbage". How do you know the intentions of the seller? Maybe they have their own plans & want to get quick cash for other investments.

Just like the current real estate market ... in general, the ongoing correction has presented varying opportunities for astute investors, IMHO. :lala:

But there is a caveat ... not all ships will rise when the tide comes in ... more than ever before, one needs to be (more) selective with their real estate (online and offline) holdings and investments, in my view. Don't pay eternal annual renewal fees (for domain names) or escalating real estate taxes / condo fees (for real estate) for that component of your portfolio in which there is - realistically - limited upside (even in a good market), IMHO. :guilty:

My motto is ... Lean and Mean by 2009โ„ข! :yell: :snaphappy:
Just my two humble sense.

Best of Luck.

It really wasn't my intention to be arrogant, but go look at the closeout or clearout sales and let me know what you find.

Jeff, agreed. I'd say the domain market is more crazy and uneven than almost any other market.

I've seen what is getting sold & most of it is not my cup of tea personally but I do see potential in some stuff whether for me or someone more in tune with a certain niche.

I have done that on a few occasions, Most send an outrageous counter offers, I don't mind negotiating at all, but when it gets to 10 PMs back and forth, I am done with the seller. I want to buy, from people who want to sale, and make it as painless as possible, It used to be that away here, not much any more. That is why i use my other avenues, when it comes to purchasing domains.
