Can registrars save the New G's by setting consumer protection standards?...............After over 3 years of the New G's we continue to get constant reports of nefarious actions from multiple registries. These actions include, but are not limited to:

*EXTREME renewal increases (3000%+)
*Distorting registration numbers for marketing purposes
*Domain clawbacks
*Questionable aftermarket sales

The actions of these registries have put a dark cloud on the ENTIRE New G program and clearly threatens their existence. These registries continue to expose the largest weakness of the New G program, lack of consumer protection. It is the lack of consumer protection that constantly comes up when debating the value of New G's. So can the registrars protect its customers by creating better consumer protection standards in regards to the New G's? Will this help? Will it be enough to save the New G's from "collapse".....Love to hear your comments. If you are from a registry or registrar and want to weigh in, PLEASE do!...:xf.smile:

Registrar = sells domains to consumers on retail level
Registry (registries) = manages specific extensions on a wholesale level

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don't think they can save them, but they could hurt them. For example, they may decide not to carry them anymore, because they are sick of doing support for clients wronged by the registries, and being accused of dirty play.

The problem is that Icann planted the seeds of the game.
By refusing to subject new extensions to price caps and regulate them like legacy TLDs (.com/.net/.org etc), it was expected that greed and desperation would soon take over.
What we have now is rogue registries, TLDs that seem to exist for the sole purpose of spamming, clawbacks, price hikes and all kinds of dubious practices.
Some TLDs are behaving OK, but even with those you have no guarantee that the rules won't drastically change in the future. Icann does not protect the registrants.

Which is just absolutely ridiculous. That should be their only job.
