Can .NET domains obtain type-in traffic?

Hi

I understand that some domain names (e.g. mytypeindomain.com) get alot of type-in traffic.

What I would like to know is whether or not the equivalent .net (eg mytypeindomain.net) will also obtain a certain amount of type-in traffic as well?

Not that I'm aware of, unless they had a previous site there and someone thought... lemme see ifthissite.net is still around.

Thanks kiplarson; this is what I thought. So, essentially, if you registered a new name with no previous history, you will not get any direct type-in traffic for anything other than a .com?

I have a .net that seems to get type in traffic. About 3 - 7 views a day with a 20% CTR. It has no recent history. I have had the domain for several years and just recently parked when I found this site this month.

I would expect very little type in traffic from .net domains. But it can happen. If you had a good keyword .net you would get type in traffic but it would not compare to the .com.

In some stray incedents .Nets can get alot of traffic, there was just a fellow whom posted about hi5.net, he supposedly was getting thousands of type-ins. I have one that gets alot, but it is a typo of a developed .net, I of course did not realize it at the time, I bought it because it was an expired name with lots of backlinks. Is it possible to get type ins on a newly registered .Net with no history? Probably not. Only other domainers, curious people and internet uninclined people would visit a newly registered .Net. It would subside after a month. Your best bet is going with 1plus.net - I have several .Nets doing great

My .net comes up about 7th of alot. PrizeFighting.net gets 3 to 10 visits a day from google

hi5.com is a big site like myspace so no mystery there. Non english .nets are likely to get type ins in my experience. For many Americans .com is it look no further. Also mistakenly pressing shift+enter instead of control+enter will bring traffic

I regged an interesting one about 2-3 weeks ago...in the towing industry a side line is letting people into their cars after they get "locked out". The correct way to write this is "lock-out". Just for fun I was checking domains and someone had lockouts.com but no one had lock-outs.com. I regged it and have gotten 2-6 views a week. Not big but it will be natural traffic when I dev it.

Don't expect to hit it big with a .net type-in. It can happen, but is not likely, that you will earn a good ROI on the $6-$10 registration fee.

That's interesting domainacrobat. Does your .net site show up without any SEO efforts on your part or have you optimised for the phrase "prize fighting"?

Thanks tjoseph. Is your .net name a very strong keyword and does it have good overture numbers for the phrase? This is interesting to know as very high overture numbers may indicate that there will be a small amount of people typing in keywordphrase.net rather than .com.

I think you have made 2 very valid points here droplister: (1) the hi5.net site obtains traffic not from speculative type-ins but from people who are aware of the site. It probably wouldn't get much in the way of type-ins if it was new / unknown. (2) I hadn't realised that shift+enter gives the .net extension: I think that this probably explains how people are typing the phrase + .net into the browser (along with speculative type-ins using .net instead of .com).

Ultimately, however, I believe you are right - .com's will get the bulk of speculative type-in@s!

Hi dentalpro. That's interesting as there seems to be a school of thought which is very anti-hyphenated names. I think that if you are planning to keep (as you are) rather than sell on then they are OK. What is your feeling on this?

bobdigital, looking at these names it is interesting to note than none of them appear to be natural or generic keywords that people would type into a browser. Could it be that they are developed / semi-developed and people are aware of the domain and actively look for it by typing the name and .net into the browser? This would support the view that natural keywords do not get much speculative .net type-ins.
