Couple of times in my domaining career, I would go check the domain that I sold awhile at high $xx - low $xxx just to find it was not renewed by the new owner.

Did it happen to you? Would you backorder or re-register it only based on the fact that you already have sold it before in expectation of another certain sale?

I see nothing wrong in re-registering an available name. By dropping the name altogether, the buyer has most likely decided that the domain has not met his/her expectations.

I might feel a little queazy about participating in a pre-release auction, though. I would be inclined to e-mail the buyer and alert him or her that the domain has expired and has been sent to auction.

Only then would I consider placing a pre-release bid.

Yes!

I would buy it back in a second.
I liked it enough to buy it the first time and I made money on it so its a no brainer.

Let's make the conditions a bit tougher:

You have waited for years to get an offer while still paying renewal fee. Once you got an offer and put it for auction, to your surprise it have bid high due to 2 stubborn bidders. You had no idea why they wanted it that much. You were happy to get rid of it and pocket some $xxx. The new buyer have dropped the name. Would you reregister it again even if you think it is not worth what somebody have paid for it if anything at all? Does the fact that somebody had bid high on the name automatically justifies its value?

are you talking from experience ? No brainy answer is Yes! if the domain sold for 10k absolutely yes if it sold for $xxx then never I hate chasing crusts! if you aim low the best you can get is low if you aim high the worst you can get is low if you get where I am going with this. Time is valuable to me so I always aim for the big break don't want to be a domainer until 65! :)

I think I remember a thread on this in the past where to buyer later email and said you didnt transfer the domain to us.

All the examples of this i heard about in the past where for originally sold for low xxx or less

I would personally contact the buyer via email to confirm that they are not looking to re-register the domain.

If they aren't, or I don't hear anything back, then I would go ahead and pick it up again if it was worth doing so.
