Brand new domains vs. expired?

Hi. I've been going through the process of trying to break into domaining, and have been reading several e-books to help educate myself. I've learned a decent amount, but the problem is, which is probably not terribly surprising, that I think I'm experiencing some so-called "analysis paralysis" now. One of the major conflicts of opinion I'm coming across is whether it's better to create your own new domain names ("hand registering" domain names, as some people seem to call it), or buying expired domain names from one of the several sites that list them. Some people seem to say that a creative new domain name that features a term people are likely to search for could have good value, while some say that the "newness" of the name makes it inherently worthless. So, you could see why I'm a bit confused and starting therefore this thread. By the way, at this time, at least, I'm not really interested in developing websites, but just flipping names (if that makes a difference). That all being said, which of these two options do YOU prefer?

By the way, if this thread ends up eliciting more conflicting views, that's fine. I figure that reading the responses all on one page from real domainers will at least give me a better ability to judge for myself. Thank you!

End users don't give a toss whether it's a brand new name or not. The only thing they care about is whether the domain is the right name for their business. But if you are flipping to other domainers, they might be prejudiced against a brand new domain. There can be a lot of downsides as well as upsides to an old name. It might have been abused in the past, or it could signal being a desirable name.
