From: The Battle for the Future of .eco

As the Internet and it’s users prepare for the release of new TLD’s there is a battle already brewing over who ICANN will choose to head the highly sought after .eco domain extension. .Eco seems to be the best fit for an extension that focuses solely on ‘green’ issues and raising money and global awareness in the name of the environment.

The two major groups jockeying for control of the .eco extension are SupportDotEco.com who’s figure head is Al Gore, former U.S. Vice President and supporting organizations such as Sierra Club and Surfriders. On the other side is DotEco.info founded by BigRoom.ca and Green Cross International has just levied it’s support as well. Mikhail Gorbachev is the founder of Green Cross Intl. While both groups intend to donate large chunks of generated revenue to their environmental organization of choice, there are huge differences in how the two entities wish to develop the .eco namespace.

I'm not totally convinced that both sides are not just trying to get their hands on it for other 'GREEN' purposes...

I've talked with both groups in depth. Each has its own merits. It will be an exciting race to watch.

Actually, money/profit/cashgrab matters aside...

some of the players are actually trying to effect change... it is not just a monetary pursuit... whether or not that matters, only time will tell. but the auction will certainly be interesting to watch since both parties are well-funded and well-connected. I suspect that both applicants will get approved by ICANN (1 commercial, 1 community backed) and move to the next step... battling it out head-to-head at auction for top dollar.

one of the players has backing from a holding company that is backing multiple TLD applications... and they just raised another round of funding: $4MM - I'm not saying that this holding company isn't focused or doesn't care about .eco / eco itself... they are simply betting on many different TLDs. hopefully not spreading themselves thin. Perhaps ICANN will use this against them.

and let's not forget the movement for .green

------
disclaimer: We are also applying for our own TLD, but not competing with anyone mentioned above.

Jeez...Al Gore pimping himself out once more.

A few more years and everyone will be laughing at the years of "global warming" alarmism. Much this like this here.

.eco sounds cool enough though

Let's not make this a global warming debate...

It seems to me like doteco.info has more of a plan on actually making .eco different than any old TLD that banks on the landrush IMHO. For now I'm pulling for that camp.

Mr. Rhee - Thanks for the info. Can you explain why you say this will be decided by an 'auction'? I never read or heard anything about ICANN auctioning off a TLD. Are you just implying that the party willing to shell out the most moolah will win the .eco extension?

Thanks!
