Backordered a misspelled domain with SnapNames

Hi guys,

I usually double and triple check before I register or backorder a domain, but this time I screwed up and misspelled the domain, and now have been emailed by SnapNames with a "Congratulations on your successful transaction. " for what they essentially hand regged for me.

Has anyone had success getting a refund for this? The domain was available and they didn't "catch" it. I already created a support ticket but have yet to hear back.

I did that once. No refunds

Pretty shady on their part to "catch" it for me when I could have just registered it. Thanks for your input.

Fully agree with you...

I guess I'll try my best to get a refund and if I can't get it, I'll take it on the chin. $79 lesson learned haha.

Hi, what's the domain, maybe it has value!?

I hope you aren't an English teacher that accidentally misspelledd onomatopoeia because that would be unfortunate . . . and yes I know;)

The domain has no value, I rather not share the domain as I'm still trying to catch it. I'm far from an english teacher ;)

So they finally charged the $79 for it today. Tried to call their toll free number and it doesn't work. Anyone know how I can get a hold of them on the phone? This is ridiculous... They register an available domain and charge me $79, shouldn't they have some sort of algorithm to only catch names that are in pending delete status and not freely available domains?

I asked them this exact question and no, they don't have that smartness. They WILL register an available domain and call it "dropcatch" and bill you for it. Good luck to you in trying to convince them. Maybe you'll have better luck than me

While tasting has nearly disappeared, it can sometimes happen that a domain is registered and then deleted within 5 days (tasted), and even later (no refund). Actually, a domain can be deleted at once, whenever you want.

As far as they are concerned, the name could have been registered and just dropped, the scripts don't take into account the history of the domain name.
They did the job.

The problem here is that one of their partner registrars must have registered the name on your behalf, so I guess they have to pay them. In fact I suppose they have zero control over the domain name and can't delete it on their own.

Thanks guys, I will try to contact them tomorrow. Their toll free support number rang twice and just failed to connect every time. They haven't replied to my email either.

Jeez that has to suck. I hope they got it refunded for you. Even then, $79 to backorder a domain is a bit high.

They told me they would give me a refund but they would have to ban me per their TOS. I told them to go ahead and give me a refund since I rather not deal with people like that anyways.

They registered an available domain and charged me for a successful backorder when I could have registered it myself (domain was not in pending delete status nor was it ever registered). Ended up catching the domain with DropCatch.com and sold it already.

I explained to them nicely(on the phone with the customer support lady & through support email) that the domain was never registered or in pending delete status and they gave me this auto-response

"Thank you for contacting SnapNames Support. Please be advised that per the SnapNames Terms of Service, all sales are final.

A refund for the domian name in question would result in the suspension of your SnapNames service. Please advise if you would like to proceed with the refund given this information.

Regards,
The SnapNames Support Team"

I don't understand this line. Please care to explain?

I caught the right domain (the one I intended to catch in the first place) with Dropcatch.com?

I've never personally used snapnames but if that is how they wish to conduct their business, im glad I am not part of that. Any reasonable dom registrar would give a refund in this case. It is unethical to register an open domain for a client through the use of a backorder credit, regardless if its with Snap names, enom or even GoDaddy.
