I'm new to ad campaigns and need to know what is an acceptable avg position and what is a profitable cpc that I shouldn't go over.

Do you need to be on the first page or is 2nd & 3rd page o.k as it is much cheaper?

Need to know about the cpc since the pennies can really add up.

No rule of thumb that applies to all situations ...

CPC can vary depending on:
- Ad to landing page relevance
- Landing page quality
- Keywords
- Type of matching (exact match, broad match, phrase match)

How high a CPC should you set: What's your landing page conversion rate? What's your average revenue per conversion?

Ad position: do you need aggressive positioning for a higher bid price or are you OK with a lower placement - fewer click through's but much lower bid prices to match? Whether you'll get anything from being on the 2nd or 3rd page varies by keyword - it will be less than the 1st page, how much less depends.

Best advice I can give you is to monitor your ad campaigns and results very closely and adjust as needed. Always experiment - keep what works, scrap what doesn't and try something else.

Experimenting sounds as good as anything. Really no other way.

Thanks for the advice.

It all comes down to monitoring - knowing your numbers, keeping what works, scrapping what doesn't. Check your stats at least once a day to start.

Use negative keywords to keep unrelated phrases which include your keywords from inflating your ad spend.

Optimizing your landing page is also important. If you have a high click-through and conversion rate, obviously you can afford to spend more for your ads and you will probably benefit from it. Conversion rate is largely determined by the merchant's site (their landing page, quality/relevance of their product or service, checkout or lead submission process, etc.) but your page can influence it more than most new people realize. It's all in what you say and how you say it :).
