Holy moly! :o

I'm excited about this news, although at the same time I'm somewhat disappointed too. Hopefully we see some good development out of these and not just 100 parked pages...but I have a feeling that many of these won't see development for quite some time...unless the dotMobi group heavily promotes these sales towards end users, perhaps? :?

I think they have rules on winning the bid the site has to be put onto a 4/5 at least webpage for starters then it must be developed within 6 months dunno if what i read was true or not???

I still dont understand why people are disappointed if a domain gets parked...no one complains is a .com is parked or a .org or a .in.

If the keyword matches the domain who cares...did people complain before parking was invented?

its something for people to bitch about... trying to convince themselves and others itll kill the extention.. the truth is - if people are going to develop they will likely do so even without the availibility of "premium names"

these auctions will give the aftermarket a nice boost.

I think the issue here is the links from parked mobi's seldom go to another compliant site. Once this starts happening in mass, users who are expecting more nice mobi sites will start saying "why bother?". Now if a parking company came along that offered nothing but compliant sites linking....Hmm.

Let's face it...domainers are the only ones not complaining about .com & other parked sites. Most consumers flat out don't like them.

My personal thoughts ...

:hi:

For those who support the developed "ecosystem", this is a disappointment IMHO. :yell:

Best efforts to create, launch and operate a live web site with relevant content within six months. (For example, acupuncture.mobi should not display a site for car sales.)

Best efforts? Six months? And only a score of 4 at Ready.mobi? Initially consist of a "parking page"? In the event of a (subsequent) sale of transfer ... ?!? Everybody (how about JUST End users / developers!) will be able to bid? :|

This, seriously, has Usual Suspects™ written all over it, in my view ... and while a potential (read; probable) boon, financially to mTLD, I much would have preferred seeing mTLD not abandon the RFP's and RFP process that would ensure development. To me, it seems like the rules are relaxing in that the "trustmark" and "ecosystem" are now far lower on the priority list than the desire for short-term gain (ie., MONEY :$: for mTLD)! :guilty: :imho:

So much for Neil's "eligible buyers" ...

Just my two sense.

yea, the people who win those names should hire magic web gnomes so they are developed simultaneously upon transfer...

six months..... i mean, thats like, a lifetime.

granted some may end up in the usual suspects hands, but in these cases they will be accepting an extra level of commitment towards development, so this is a good thing.

i think the rfp process just prooved to be too long and complicated when you're dealing with thousands of domains - it was the first time attempted by any registry and probably the last time.

Agreed 100%

This will be a very good analysis of how people outside of Mobility and Namepros feel about .mobi. A large portion of the sales we've seen to date have been, to put it bluntly; domainer incest.

But there's an overwhelming amount of names here and this will no doubt be the first indicator of how the general domain market values .mobi.

I think it's great! It'll help us understand better what our collections are worth -- and will no doubt saturate DN Journal with entries for weeks to come

All those entries on DN Journal alone should breath additional life into the extension. Domainers previously not interested in .mobi will all of the sudden be shocked as .mobi does the impossible -- gets more listings on the Top 20 than .com :o

Spot on again namewaiter!

Way to mix it up MTLD. They always said there would be VARIOUS ways that the "premium" names would make it into daylight.

It's great news to:
1. Celebrate the 1-year anniversary with a mini "landrush" (albeit a "Pool-like" landrush)
2. Get some of the "premium" names out of hiding
3. Generate buzz in the domaining industry AND in the public
4. Give those who missed (or dissed) the first .mobi introduction a chance to get on board
5. Ruffle some feathers and toss the budgies some millet to chew on

From a domain seller's perspective the only temporary downside I see is a potential lull in aftermarket sales due to the immediate increase of supply of good generic names on the market and very public promotion of those names. This may overshaddow others' offerings but the net is a BIG positive as it will bring more focus to the .mobi market in general.

BIG surprise that anything that MTLD does is s "disappointment" to some "less-than-optimistic" types.

A score of "4/5" could be garnered because of a graphic item or lengthy content that puts the page just over a small threshold for loading time. It can be fully functional .mobi site that meets all other coding requirements. No real worries there.

To the real world I would imagine that some .mobi critics who have been holding a small number of undeveloped .mobi names FOR OVER 6 MONTHS have little credibility when it comes to complaining about lack of a developed Shmecosystem or MTLD allowing name winners up to six moths to develop their sites.

LOL....

I'm sure whoever ends up with these names is not going to be in a position to just drop their life and develop the new acquisition the next day or so. Nor the next week. It takes some time just to put together simple sites. I am quite confident that these new owners will prioritize their new mobi. I think 6 months is just about right...at least it should be enough to get something nice up and running. Maybe not outstanding...but nice.

Now "some" are asking...demanding...for new types of content, scoring 5/5 in an unreasonable time frame.
Hmm. Plop down $XX,XXX, drop everything else in your life and come up with a never before seen or done (or dare I say "unique") 5/5 mobi site in a moth or two. Someone needs to get a grip on reality. First off, putting together something other than a simple site scoring 5/5 is no easy task. If you get 4/5...that's pretty good in my book. The problem is, the more you go to flashy sites with any bells and whistles (including lot's of images)..the 5/5 is likely to be gone. Believe it or not...there's no shame to a 4/5 mobi site. They still display quite well.

Well said Acc! :) I for one certainly think most of our names may fall in value temporarily as everyone competes for the "cream of the crop" -- for the most part, these 100 names! But with the added public spotlight it will no doubt bring to .mobi, I have no way of seeing this as anything but a great thing :)

I've been an outspoken critic of mtld holding so many names for a long time and it's nice to see they're starting to listen -- Neil will have plenty of time to flip them burgers now too

All in all, I'm very pleased with the changes that have taken place recently. I never was a big fan of Neil, as many of you know, and already have alot of faith in our new guy -- something you won't hear me usually say about someone new with my less-than-optimistic personality ;)

As for the 4/5... Let me tell you all how easy it is to go from 5/5 to 4/5... I'm working on a huge health site right now. It's currently about 400 pages in size, but projected to be around 10,000 once completed... Anyway, I was thinking that with such a huge site I should make it fancier than my antioxidant site which is pretty bare. Went down from 5/5 to 2/5 pretty fast just adding some pretty graphics and designs -- they were all mobile compliant, although a bit bandwidth heavy, I'll admit. My target market is wealthy Americans, Europeans, and Asians for the time being (granted these are most of the guys with internet enabled phones) and I figured that by the time your average Joe could afford a $500+ internet enabled phone, badwidth would be cheap enough and internet fast enough that my site wouldn't be a drag. Apparently mtld doesn't see it that way ;) Back to Barebones 1.0 -- but at least it scores 5/5 :tu:

Agreed :) I've been working on my new site for almost 2 months now and it's only about 4-5% done. I'll probably launch it once it's about 20% done -- being 8 months after having started work on it, so I really see 6 months as being a minimum timeframe for someone like me who's doing this part-time and can't dedicate more than 10-20 hours per week to it.

Let's not forget what might be coming up at TRAFFIC Miami as well. I thought it was interesting seeing these released on SEDO rather than TRAFFIC (it being so close).
