When transferring domain from one registrar to another, is the domain treated as a new registration as far as time??

As an example:

I have a domain on registrar A that has 3 months until expire. If I transfer that domain to registrar B, I don't still have 3 months left on registrar B do I?. or does it start back to day 1 and I have 1 year as if new registration???

I have quite a few domains to renew and am looking for any transfer specials to save money.

You add one year to the current expiry date when you transfer a domain.
