I have heard that they are mostly nofollow links. Is blog commenting still a good way to get backlinks?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I'm not one who believes that nofollow links have zero value. I think if it's relevant, than there's some weight given (albeit small).

Of course this is conjecture.

Even with nofollow, the value of the link will depend on the SE's algo's, and there is always value in users clickthroughs, sometimes long after the post was made.

Do follow is for backlinks but are no follow blog comment also have direct traffic from those who see your url. Google tend to follow links even it's nofollow it just don't pass PR juice.
Blog commenting with a relevant one is a great way to build 100% relative backlinks

Yes, you can get backlinks from blogs by leaving comments provided the blog is dofollow.

just a sidenote: "dofollow" isn't an actual link attribute ;)

The issue with nofollow is very different, and a lot of the confusion is simply the result of the name "no follow". No follow prevents any PR from being given to the target site. However, the bot DOES follow the site. So this is a good way to get a site indexed, or the targeted keywords to be targeted.

Leaving comments on other peoples blogs is a GREAT way to get one-way links to your website, increasing the traffic to your website significantly as search engines pick up the links. Neil Shearing has created software that allows you to find blogs in your specific niche that do not use the 'nofollow' tag. Then you simply read the blogs, leave an intelligent, well-thought out reply in their comments, and you have genuine one-way links to your site that search engines will devour. No spamming! You need to put a little effort into reading the blogs you find, and leaving genuine comments of interest.

You've gotta try this software. It really IS free, and Neil is a fantastic, trustworthy guy. Have fun!

Many bloggers are installing a dofollow plugin in comments. Find out dofollow blogs by searching in google.
