Are Blacklisted Domains Worthless?

Hello, NPers,

I was thinking of buying a domain that I notices is up for reg. But domaintools.com is showing that it is "blacklisted" (I'm guessing for spam since it links to a bunch of stuff on Spamhaus).

I believe that the domain is getting some targeted traffic. At least enough to pay for itself with a mini-site. But I really have no clue as to how much traffic.

So, does the fact that it is "blacklisted" make any difference? Does a domain somehow lose it's traffic when it's in "blacklisted" status?

Are there any other downsides to regging a blacklisted domain?

Anyone know?

Just to be clear, is it the domain that is blacklisted or the IP of the server the domain is hosted on ? Many people host their site on a shared IP with other people so if one spams the other sites/domains may be affected as well.
The issue is not losing traffic I believe but having mail rejected (if you send bulk Email from that domain etc). IMO if the name is good grab it, let it rest for some time and it should eventually clear its slate.

I have one domain with this problem - It was number one in google for about a year - it is now number 7 (for my domains two keywords) so in my case it has'nt affected traffic.

I would say yes and no. Yes because you probably won't get much if any traffic from G and the other SE'/directories it feeds. But there are many other ways to promote websites with the burst of social marketing. Think Digg, Del.icio.us, etc.

Traffic should not be affected, you just can't send mail to many servers. If you're creating a mini-site you should be OK. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's the server IP, not the domain, that's blacklisted.

Good luck, I'd go for the domain regardless if it's blacklisted or not. I believe you can make a request to get it "unblacklisted", at least that's what I heard from someone.

Yes, you can make a request with google to get the site reviewed. Matt Cutts was talking about it on webmasterradio the other night. I dont remember exactly where its at but on google.com there is an area with the information you will need. For the most part they are good people and if you are legit then I don't think it will be a problem for you. Let us know how it turns out please.

I think if the domain is a premium one. then grab it no matter what.

NPers can always come up with ideas later to help you sort out the problems
