Aquiring and expensive domain

I wouldn't call myself a domain news, I only have about 30 domains, which is tiny compared to some peoples portfolio, but I have been domaining since 05.

I have never bought/sold a domain above $400+ and recently my business partner and I have come across a one (dictionary) word that would suit the site we are launching. Using Whois I got the details of the owner and dropped them an e-mail, it has been a few weeks now and they have not replied. I was wondering what was the best way to go about acquiring the domain.

E-mail is not as reliable as it used to be. Legitimate mail is sometimes caught by spam filters. It is possible that the E-mail address is no longer in service, or more likely the owner is not interested in selling or expecting a higher offer.
You can either send another E_mail to follow up or give him a phone call to show you are serious.

Even writing a well thought-out snail mail letter in a business like approach should at least up your odds at getting some kind of a response from them, if you can find that information.

If you are really serious in purchasing A high value domain and the owner will not contact you. You could create a certifed offer at networksolutions. I own a 3-letter domain and frequently get offers from folks who would like to buy it for $50 or $100. The last time I had it appraised it was valued over 50K, so a 3- or 4-digit offer is... someone fishing for a fool. I very, very seldom respond to inquiries.

So, speaking as a receiver of inquiries, if you are really interested in whatever domain you are looking at, I would suggest the following:

1. Make sure your offer is in the "serious-offer" ball park. If it isn't, don't expect a reply.

2. If it is a viable offer, then do anything you can to let the owner know you really are serious (and not just sniffing because you'd like to resell it and pocket the profit).

sorry to say this but...

nobody wants to read a lot of blah blah blah

all they want to see is $$$$$ in the email

if you are not even going to offer an amount, then you are spamming.

i get these types of emails and it becomes annoying.
