In this thread if you have a company you can have one post about it (Dave) and tell people how to contact you.

What I am going to talk about is not so much a model but what I think is key to success.

Proprietary Content IMO I think it better to have only 5 to 10 domains and get a good camera and software and learn to take and edit. Right now its like wow video. It won't be that way down the road people will come to those that have original content not a you tube clone. You Tube is great for filler and complimentary content and even better use them to provide traffic to your site by giving a taste of your original content on their site.

You then will have control, you will increase your profit making opportunities by syndicating your content for a fee.

This is what I would like to hear some discussion on but everyone post what their ideas are for monetizing their .tv domains.

Yea, i agree you need to either create or aggregate your own video content to be successful.

Linking to a bunch of YouTube videos that someone else posted over there adds very little value.

As I user, I will just go to you and have more control because I can search over there.

Agreed. You have to control your content.

The other thing you have to have is some mechanism to drive traffic.

SEO or another site you can divert traffic from or a viral strategy or an ad budget.

As far as I can see, LocalExperts is the only one even on the map on that dimension

Please can we get some specifics up from a developed site that has real banner ads on what those can pay and how you get them? This would be helpful for us as we consider developing a site.

It seems this would be the way to go if you were creating original content. How do you keep that content from getting "grabbed"? Or do you just use a logo/intro to mark it so if it does get distributed it's a ad for your site.

I think Phil Askey's www.dpreview.com is a great example of a content-driven site. He started with detailed reviews of P-n-S digicams. This attracted lots of people and his forums began to grow. He added links to major online retailers at the bottom. A few major companies and some smaller ones got onboard via banner ads. His reviews become more and more detailed and he added staff. The banners were all the BigNames and he sold it for millions to Amazon.com a few weeks back.

All I will say is this, all lead generation companies have the same "core" problem, holding traffic. Since most lead gen sites are a bunch of forms, the typical user experience is one and done.

How can you hold traffic?

We shall see.

BTW. Banner Ads are great to pay the rent, not make Payroll. You won't see many banner ads on my sites. They simply don't cut it unless you have scale.

I don't know what you're talking about lexprt. What leads? What does make payroll? Can you give your site urls and explain?

Thanks

Go study Respond (dot) com. Servicemagic (dot) com. NeedContractor (dot) com, LowerMyBills (dot) com, Lendingtree (dot) com, Reply (dot) com, Decidio (dot) com, GoFindA (dot) com

George

You don't see many banner ads on those sites. And those sites make ALOT more money than Demand Media.

I would like to do this equity, but it sound risky when everywhere everyone else is giving content away. What's the angle? Quality? Product reviews? and you make $$$ from ads?

Have you done anything like this? We have been talking about getting a canon HD10 or DC50, something along those lines (upper end consumer vid. cam). I'm an experience photographer w/DSLR (Canon 20D) lights and lenses, and I've done some product photography (see http://picasaweb.google.com/David.Keith.Chambers/Bradley_Brand_Furniture_Chairs). That's furniture made by a company my Dad owns, so I did it for free. I might do the same type of thing with video, like little shows of a mastercraftsman making a chair, table, etc... sort of edutainment like PBS.

Another avenue is local realestate. I have a good relationship with one of the most aggressive local realtors, but he's super tight. And the local market here is only 25K ppl. It is a University town and there are some rich people here, but it's not like a huge market and the local pop isn't the most tech-savy so I'm really skeptical about getting enough views.

It would be great if anyone who's tried any of this would comment.

Thanks,
~KC

well, i have some ideas for few of my sites that i am pondering jumping in and developing- but- i cant say what i am going to do because- well- i dont see it yet and it would be dumb of me to not be the first to do it and try to do it the best-

but, i can tell you that they all involve video, making money and have NOTHING to do with social networks.

not much of a help. am i ;-(
