I'm sorry to tell you, I've really had a hard time keeping my tongue in check - but 99.99% of the business models suggested or being attempted for the DOT TVs on this forum will never work.

Geo Network Model - for someone who has never run a geo site - I have spoken at geo conferences and I have a tough time making it work because of the lack of direct navigation traffic - NOT GOING WORK

Live Streaming Entertainment - Most won't work because most don't have traffic and most people aren't willing to pay to cover the cost

Global Classified Video Sites - After 2 or 3 searches producing zero results, the limited number of users will never come back. You need 50-100 million to brand a global site. Otherwise, it will be a wasteland so many DOT COMs that went DOT BOMB because they couldn't get enough traffic

Entertainment Video sites - produce your own video - you need to cover the cost. With a CPM pre-roll video - you better be the world's greatest enterainer or streaming porn.

Pay Per Click and Affliate Program - I have 10 years experience in both - they might pay office rent a nice lunch - beyond that - YOU WILL NEVER have enough traffic to make PPC work.

PPC works for large sites because DUH that have alot of traffic.

Directories - One again no traffic, you won't be able to get advertisers.

I can go down the line on any idea anyone submits and the #1 REASON WHY MOST INTERNET BUSINESSES FAIL

NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!

That is true for dot coms, dot net, dot whatever.

That is why LOCAL.COM spends millions every year buying every keyword off google - because they don't have enough traffic to make their model work even with LOCAL.COM.

NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!
NOT................ENOUGH...................TRAFFIC!

Unless you have traffic, all these great ideas are not going anywhere FAST!

And that's the way it is!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

What are the .01% that will work?

The key is you can't test different models unless you have traffic. I have not been on Namepros much and been focusing on development and once I have something to share that works I will, but right now I am in traffic building mode, than will test different models, and than give everybody feedback. That might take a few months but I will keep everybody posted.

Thanks, Jim

Yes its all about Traffic, its all about getting your business model into the public eye. I disagree with the OP's certainty on "hand picked catergorys, he singled out" its very negative and means nothing in the scheme of things.. Its all about traffic on the net on any brand, any extension, so to hand pick a few category's that wont work is mute as its ALL down to traffic and branding.

What I see is that most people that have a domaining background dont know to get to the next step, to develop a great site and find a niche and traffic to build a brand.

Building a few youtube clones, ning sites, wordpress or the now defunct me channel will look like all the other clones on the net and people do not respect clones IMO.
The caveat is though, that if the content is new, the idea is fresh, the site matters not..

In general I think there has been a lot of great development going on and many will need to get traction before any judgment can be made.. It takes a good year to get a site standing on its own feet in the search engines and branding etc.. unless you have millions to invest, you plod along and do your best with what you have and what you believe will work.. there is no exacts on any business, we see new and innovative ideas daily.

So in short, I agree with OP regarding Traffic, but that crosses all extensions and all catergorys.

PM me and expect as many follow ups as needed... Im not that important. lol.

What are the .01% that will work?

In summary, narrow niche verticals. The problem is that people try to tackle too much without the investment capital to make it work.

For Live Streaming -

I believe that will work in a local market, the problem is making that work nationwide. You want to stream weddings in your area, I believe you can make that work. You want to stream events close to your home - I believe that will work. You want to stream event nationwise or worldwide......how are you going to market that service. What happens when an existing wedding company offers the same service.

I think you need to have 1M investment to make Live Broadcasting work - just to have a cash of money to market the service, make mistakes, and have cash to recover from those mistakes.

For Geos -

Associated Cities

AG: What are the newest and hottest ways to monetize traffic on the Internet today?
DB: Itโ€™s all about lead generation. If youโ€™re a GeoDomain and you donโ€™t have an effective lead-generation platform that tracks calls, form submissions and clicks to your local advertising partners, youโ€™re leaving a lot on the table. Weโ€™ve built a dashboard into our platform that allows local advertisers to manage their online marketing campaigns across our domains.

They can log in to a backend that allows them view all of the leads weโ€™ve generated for their business and even listen to inbound calls.

When we were monetizing traffic via ad banners or pay-per-click platforms, we were making an eCPM of $15. Weโ€™re now making more than $100 for every 1,000 page views across our network. In addition to the higher monetization, lead generation also allows you to compile information about consumers across your sites.

We collected detailed information about more than 100,000 consumers in 2008 as they completed forms requesting quotes from local advertisers. The next generation of our monetization strategy is remarketing additional products and services to these visitors now that we know more about them.

You knew lead generation was somewhere in that answer............................

On the technology side Stickam seems to be doing a good job of delivering live video. I'd love to know how it does it and what its costs are.

David Bayer makes good points. I wonder what sort of call center system they use. Something Asterisk based?
