Always judging domain names...

I've found that I'm always judging the domain names I see everywhere...on TV commercials, newspapers, business cards, radio.

Especially some new startup putting on a commercial with a bad brandable and I'm like "Kind of a weak brand, I wonder where they bought it and how much they paid"

Or if it's for an infomercial for a new product and they use GET(ProductName).com - I'm like "What a cheap company, they couldn't just buy their productname.com...amateurs"

One time I sent an email to this company that used a 3-hyphened domain name that was advertising an ebook about "Stellar marketing strategies" and claimed to be internet marketing experts. I emailed them and said "How are you going to teach me stellar marketing when you are using blah-blaaah-blah.com, you broke the first rule yourself."

Another time a telemarketer called me asking if I'd like to receive a free gold investment kit info package, I asked what their website was and then asked for the owners email "because I'm selling GoldInvestmentKit(dot)com"

I started writing down the really bad domains from local businesses I hear in the media as potential end users.

Just thought it was funny how domaining really does become a part of your day-to-day life like that popular catchphrase says "Domaining is a way of life".

Anyone else do this?

Never heard that phrase before but I catch myself doing the same thing.. Every domain I see anywhere I judge from a domainers POV..

When I see a great name I think, damn, that is a company that gets it. And if it is a bad name I think that company is going down :)

I recall seeing that phrase a few times on some notable sites awhile back, maybe on Nameinvestors, DNS, or one of Adam Dicker's projects. A little overdramatic, but being a domainer really can influence your perspective on business.

I'm guilty of doing this too..Whether it's TV, Newspapers/Magazine, on different Gadgets, or even the side of a bus. I'm always judging domains when I see them...

Not a domainer here but I always have one in mind for the domains of the many "SEO experts" out there. Surprisingly they tend to often be pretty crappy for someone claiming to work miracles with your SEO strategy... ;)

The fact that you are judging names from a marketing standpoint and "does it make a good business name" tells me that you get what 90% of domaines do not get when registering or buying names..... Congrats

Right. A successful domainer already has a sales strategy before he clicks the buy button.
