Advice on negotiating with a large corp

Hi, I'm new to the site and hoping you guys can help me out!

I bought a .net domain but was subsequently outbid at auction for the .com by a US corporation with several thousand employees. I've since received an offer of $4000 for the .net and a bit of detective work confirmed it's from the same company. I was going to build a site on the .com but, as I missed out on that, the .net isn't worth so much to me now.

Anyway, $4000 is their initial offer but they say it's their limit and suggest I can take it or leave it. This could be true as they got the .com domain for a lot less and it isn't obviously related to their name or line of business. On the other hand, they've definitely got the cash and they came to me so I feel like I should try and squeeze a few more dollars from them :]

This is my first time selling a domain - any advice on what to do?

Thanks!

Take the offer.
With 4k you can make a good start in creating a good portfolio.

I agree, if the company already owns the .com version of it, and you're being offered $4K for the .net for it, take it and run!.

Think of it this way, what are you going to do with the .net version of it, will you be able to monetize it and make more than $4K on it?.

I agree, take the $4000 for the .net, in this case.

They have the .com - and, you said they paid less for the .com than they are offering you for the .net...?

It looks like they are just tidying up, trying to protect their brand by buying the .net - but, its not essential for them......They are probably your only buyer for that domain, and are just as likely to walk if you dicker about.

Good deals get lost 'cos folks get greedy.

Take the cash now - it likely won't come again for this domain.

I agree with everyone else. Accept their offer.

I agree. Take the offer and, if it is possible, give us an update on the sale. If you can, let us know the domain name. Thanks

depends on several factors, but primarily:

#1) your business model
#2) the domain name. great keyword? generic VS brandable? trademarked? etc.

if you are in this game to flip domains, then you've got one check mark next to #1. If the domain is not a generic, or has heavy type-ins, and has other cons, then you've got a check mark next to #2 as well.

but if you model is to develop, will .com owner be targeting the same space? or? is the domain a category killer? great keyword? massive type ins? is the domain critical to your business? etc? then you've got to weigh those options heavily.

i.e. if the domain is amazing like search.net, giftbaskets.net, miami.net, etc... I'd hesitate on selling.

but there's a #3 factor that many people forget:

#3) Do you need the money right now? Will it change your life? Will it help you pay important bills that are weighing you down? Can you reinvest that money into a better opportunity? etc...

Weigh your options carefully. You're in a great position right now knowing who the buyer is, knowing they own the .com, and having a $4K decision to make... it's a problem many people would love to have. :) But whatever you do, don't stretch out the negotiations and make a decision and stand by it. Be sure to use a secure Escrow/Transfer service, get an agreement from them but be sure not to sign any non-compete agreement (NDAs are ok, NCAs not always).

But obviously, not knowing the domain name makes it harder to weigh other factors. If you'd like a serious answer, you can send me a private message and I'll keep the details confidential and send you a reply within 24 hours with some extended info/research you might be able to use.

Either way, good luck.

I also think you should take the offer, they got what they wanted, the .com your .net is important for them but not essential.

I'd definitely take the money & reinvest it into other domains, you've just struck lotto.

Unless it is a phenomenal generic, $4K for a .NET is a great offer. Don't lose a sale by being greedy.

What has more value that domain or $4K in the current market?

In this case you can easily negotiate for 7K to 8K, because well running company made an offer on your .net and probably they have owned most of the other extensions. Even if your negotiation not ends in positive sign this time, still you will get offers in future from same buyer.

take that and just finish the deal ;)

This sounds like brand protection, so I would assume that take it or leave it means just that.

And in this economy I wouldn't treat it as an uncashed lottery ticket kept in your drawer that you can cash at any time. That offer might not be there in a month of management decides that belts need to be tightened.

I agree that you should take the offer. $4000 sounds like a good offer for a dot net that they already hold the dot com of.
