Accepting unregistered PayPal pmts?

Would you accept a paypal payment form an unregistered buyer with very few posts here and whose name after searching has turned up some suspicious, though unproven, accusations on the buyers name? I've never had a chargeback, but what is the risk of that? I have not transfered the domain yet while I think about this.

I wouldn't. I don't know how big the deal is, but if it's an average size deal, I would pass. If it's for a good amount of money, have him send you a check or MO and wait until you have the money in your hands, then send him the domain.

Just a couple hundred dollars. I think I'm going to refund and cancel. Not worth it. Don't like what his name pulled up on the forums. I don't want to say it outloud here in case I'm wrong. But, newbie here, trouble with credit card at first, name brings up suspicious activity, I think I'll pass.

Going forward, what is the best way to make sure you have a good buyer? Is a verified paypal account with some previous transaction good enough? I know if the buyer is from a dn forum I can check his posts and trader ratings, but sometimes a buyer just emails you out of nowhere.

Oh, does forcing someone to go through Sedo for the name protect me from chargebacks? On a $200 name that is only $20.

Thats the bad thing with the internet, people can always make new usernames, and paypal addresses. There is really no 100% safe way. Best bet would be to find a member who is known and is in good standing. While a verified paypal account is good, it doesn't stop fraud.

If your sale is a couple hundred dollars, thats a pretty nice one - see if he will send a check or MO, then send the domain after you have the money in hand.

All I know is you Never accept from unconfirmed address...

you have zero protection, and anyone can just get your domain/item and then get their money back and you're SOL

It should. As the money is being sent to Sedo, not you. And once the sale is over, Sedo does not have control over your domain... so if there is a chargeback, you won't lose the money nor the domain. If the person does a chargeback against Sedo, chances are they'll bring there lawyers out.

If I do that will the transaction show that it is from an echeck? And if so, do I have to wait until it clears, and does Paypal tell me that?

just use escrow or afternic escrow in future, but it is difficult for you to rewind on this transaction apart from killing the sale.

They are too expensive for a $200 sale. Sedo would be cheaper.

Paypal will note it is an echeck and will place a hold on the funds until they clear. Once they clear you can transfer the domain.

I suggest you email or call Paypal suport about this, they can give you the most accurate info.

Even an eCheck won't protect you from people claiming they didn't get the item if they use an unconfirmed address. Be warned!

The only time i will deal with an unverified buyer is when im buying or selling small amounts of $NP's.

Well, we accept and process literally hundreds of unverified/unregistered payments for hosting services via PayPal daily (which usually can be canceled easily enough if there is a suspicion of fraud) and so far no major issues at all for many years; but when it comes to domain registrations or domain sales, which are obviously non-refundable and one-shot deals, a request for faxing some ID or other verifiable proof of identity is a good idea before proceeding. If not, just stick with a service like Escrow.com at the minimum and avoid hassle when in doubt.

:hi:

Remember it's only a $20 commission IF the domain is Parked at Sedo
otherwise it will be $50.

I refunded the payment and killed the deal before transferring the name.

Careful, I don't trust the person and he's around the forums. I'm not going to say the user name in case I'm wrong.

I appreciate that, but it's all taken care of. And it's not fair to be posting people's names just based upon suspicion.
