Review

I have found this company to be totally untrustworthy. I purchased a name with them last few days of december and got confirmation email end of Dec - Jan 9th whois lists someone else as the owner. I called AFNIC and was told that there was a technical problem that allowed me to buy the domain when it was not available and that the first owner registered it on 23rd Dec - after i searched the name on 20th. The domain is so obscure that i can't even con myself its a fluke - a three letter .fr in an extreme niche area...nah.

Overall a nightmare. the ability to reg names and pay later was good for a while, but now the hassle factor has increased. Everything is set for automatic renewal, so if you decide you want to drop at the last minute, you can't. Even worse they now charge you a LATE FEE on top of it ($18.99) They will also charge reg fee ($8.99) for "external domains" even when the name isn't registered with them! My newbie mistake, was regging with them, now I'm trying to get (60) names out of there as fast as I can!

Good luck. They recently sent me invoice after invoice for domains I transferred away ages ago. I ignored them and they proceeded to debt collector. They are a cancer in the domain name industry.

Terrible

Not good. Went with them on price. Interface was OK for a few domains but not any quantity. Found that setting a domain to not auto-renew turns off features such as privacy protection and dns management. Domain transfers out take a week although I've never had to contact customer service related to a transfer out.

The worst! Impossible to cancel contract.

Tried to cancel domains. You have to log into a different subdomain. Ordered cancellation.

Got invoice a month later. The reps said I didn't cancel. Told me the cancellation must be confirmed by an email. I never saw that email. He said sometimes the email doesn't come. I told the rep that 1and1 is the worst company and he needs to get out. I told him I'd try another way to stop payment.

Canceled credit card number to prevent over $200 from being debited.

A word to the wise: STAY FAR AWAY!

Back in 2006 had quite a good time with 1and1.co.uk but would not use them for any complex database or php sites as their support is rubbish.

Also have had billing issues with them threatening to send the debt collection agency round simply because they let my card expire and didn't tell me there was no billing method on the account.

Good affiliate commissions though :P

I created an entire website about their repeated attempts to defraud me and steal money from me for domains I canceled, confirmed the cancellations, everything.

I just wanted to bump this thread because I too have been scammed by the 1and1 billing process.

I've cancelled all of the domain packages I ever had with them, being sure to "Confirm" via their emails. The debit card I had on file with them expired and I'm still getting invoices for domains I cancelled years ago!!!

I've even gotten debt collection letters in the mail for domains I've cancelled. This company should be shut down. They are a bunch of crooks!!!
