I thought it would be informative if some people wanted to share the biggest mistake they MADE. NOT the biggest mistake they didn't do. People wont learn from your mistake "I thought of facebook but never developed it".

What will be informative is if people just say a mistake they MADE.

I will go first..

I can say the biggest mistake I have MADE would be buying into the gTLD hype and registering 5 .asia domains.. I want to say that at the time I pre-ordered them they were like almost $200 a piece..

I secured 5... and let the 5 drop after the first 2 years...

It was a costly mistake as the $1000 could have been used elsewhere..

I will NEVER buy into the gTLD hype again..

:)

I've done it a few times actually... Selling websites prematurely, soon to find out they have grown immensely.

I won't make this mistake again, i'm in it for the long haul now.

For every loser there's a winner... With enough time, and losing, i may just be a winner.

Usually the first thing I do when i get a direct contact about a domain is add a "0" at the end of my asking prices on sedo...

Mistake made about a week ago.

Created a support forum for a website, wrote tutorials and a whole bunch of original content.

I then proceeded to delete some SQL databases that i didn't need. Turns out i ticked that forums database too, without a backup.

All that work was thrown away, i hand't created a backup yet given i had JUST set everything up. Managed to salvage a bit of the content from FF's cache.

Search the forum for members' horror stories trying to transfer out or cancel domains at 1&1.com (The UK operation are marginally better).

- Got interested in domains in 1998, but did not register much of anything for another 2 years. It was $70 a piece, so couldn't justify it and hence did not look.
- Having a bunch of domains at Registerfly and losing $xxxx that was in my account when they closed. Had to move all the domains from there..
- Having a bunch of domains at 1&1 (was ok until they raised prices), so had to move them all..what a pain. But in doing so I did trim my portfolio, helped out in the end
- Registering some .ws and .mobi. Let most .mobi and .ws drop

Now I focus mainly on .com and .in/.co.in

Hopefully your potential buyers dont want them pushed to another registrar... I have had nothing but trouble with 1and1, even just pushing to another 1and1 account has been a pain...

the LAST thing you want in the middle of a domain transaction is to run into snags with a registrar, the potential buyer is likely to run if problems start occurring. It is hard enough to land a buyer, I wouldn't chance ruining it on a shotty registrar.

My biggest mistake was always selling a domain too soon. There was one in my main industry that was easy worth 100 times what I sold it for at the time. Back when I bought it, the term did not really exist.

Today I made a f...ng mistake. Found a great domain but wasn't so sure so was ready to press PAY button for reg but wanted to be sure if was worth regging it cause have abrev in it so I check google for less than minutes and press buy to confirm. Right after I get a message failed reg, will proceed refund :(

So next time don't hesitate when you think it's worth.

Well not a big deal as Abrev in it gives less inmportances but I hate to lose!

Rejecting a $750 Offer from a London Company. I was greedy and asked for $1,200. Never heard back. I could not find any other buyer. Ultimately, I decided to go back and ask them. Got a offer of $250. I accepted. I pushed the domain first and never heard back.

I lost $750 and the Domain Name.

That really sucked.
You lost $500 but you have sold this domain :)

I purchased CSSU.com for $5000. He got me good. I can't even get a good $500 for it on GoDaddy Auctions.

Biggest domaining mistake: buying into .tel

Biggest "life" mistake: at 18, I went to the police because my family was harassing me and trying to keep me from leaving the great state of Iowa.

Big mistake: I ended up in a mental institution for two months.

But I did leave Iowa, anyway.

Not reading the fine print for new extension releases for a landrush buy! I paid low $xxx only to find they allow "multiple applications" for the same domain, which, of course, results in an auction for the domain between all the applicants for that domain. The auction winner gets it, and everyone else who paid the price and thought "domain available" meant it was going to be reserved for them, forfeits their "registration" payment.

This happened to me as well with .co.

I fought back, and challenged the registrar to show me where it stated in TOS that my $XXX wouldn't be returned to me.

They couldn't, so they refunded my fee, minus a $25 fee (which had been disclosed in TOS).

Sometimes you just have to make a little noise.

Never again, though, will I buy into a landrush deal.

Getting overextended and allowing domains to expire out of frustration. I've allowed a few excellent domains to drop. It is important to keep emotions out of buying, selling and renewing decisions. I am not that good at following my own advice, but I strive to improve.

On a side note, for the last 8 years or so I have been involved in a study in patience. Every year, I contact the owner of this one domain that sits unused. They have an outrageous amount listed on the domain. It has no commercial value, they cannot be getting click throughs, but it would be fun to own just because I like to tinker. I offer $250, and let them know that although I like the domain, I do not need it, and will never offer more. The offers go unreplied to.

Now, that fellow could acknowledge me. He could have sold the domain to me 8 years ago and converted the $250 into more domains. But no, he is waiting on that one fictitious customer he thinks will show someday and pay out the wazoo for a domain that has zero commercial value.
