$50 Scam

NameSilo
Watch
I contacted this dude and we agreed to $50 for the name. As Nigerian, Paypal isn't fully functional over here. I hard to look for way to receive the money via paypal and didn't message him for a few days.

Then I got an email from hims saying he is losing trust because I have not replied him nor transfer the name.

I told him that paypal isnt functional in Nigeria and that I was looking for a friend that would help me receive the money. Well when I got someone, I transferred the name to him and he confessed he has gotten the domain and appeared surprised that I could trust him to send the name. He also confess that I was the first to do such and seemed excited. With feeling in the air, I thought he would prompt the payment immediately but sadly, that was the last I heard from him.

He had been replying with his iphone right from start and there is no way he hasn't read my emails. The dude is based in US.

After I noticed that he wasnt replying I told him that since he doesn't want to pay, I wish him well with name. However, I will drop his ID after some days so that others can avoid him.

Hey, I am just a observer from side and love a good read also pay attention to the detail! Just read other post where you said your next goal is to make $xx,xxx sale

https://www.namepros.com/threads/xx-xxx-escrow-com-with-namecheap-registrar.860239/page-2

Yet earlier here you said you have made sales over $15,000 with buyers having no problems..

Maybe I just got it wrong and that's all the sales summed up together you have made up to date?
Dude, did you do comprehension in English language in school?

I said I have sold, that is when you add al my sales together, it's over $15000.

In the namecheap thread I was referring to a single sale equating to 5 figures.

Fair enough and my apologies, that's why I mentioned I may be wrong ;)

English isn't my first language, but + or - letter 's' can often be close call as I have seen it many times on this very forum..

Can see the deal has been concluded so congratulations to both of you for finaly managing to put this behind you and all the best in future!

Interesting story... I went to the store and liked one perfume. I told the salesman I want to buy it. The salesman offered to try some other perfumes, but I didn't like the smell. Before I even pulled out my wallet to pay, the salesman suddenly puts the perfume into my bag proclaiming I am the owner now and what's more asking me to pay for it to the stranger.

With all my respect for a good motive to protect reputation of Nigerian, I will return the perfume.

@jideofor - Did you specifically mention the method of payment? You are supposed to with transactions on NamePros. But what I don't really understand is you've been a member here for 6 years and you haven't yet figured out a method of payment where the buyer can pay and you get the money? Does every transaction have to be a one off transaction?

With regards to the size of the money involve, I felt PayPal would be the best. Using sedo or any of those market place to transact $50 sale might reduce the money when it gets to me after commission.

I have used sedo and I have used wire transfer.

Stub, the transaction was off namepros.

I will wait for the payment to be settled before I say anything as regards observations and the level of objectivity displayed thus far.

So what methods of payments do you have on NP and elsewhere for low priced transactions?

I rarely sell domains on namepros. The last ones I sold was over 2 years ago and PayPal was used which went smoothly.

Sure but not until I have voiced opinion on how some people judge issues which to me shouldn't be.

I wish to thank everyone who has taken out time to make their opinions aired, whether for or against my disposition.

However, having seen how some persons on here have had to handle issue, I am must say I am disappointed.

The English word said: "There are two sides to a coin". I didn't make those words, neither did my forebear, but the English man did!

Firstly, I will say I may have been wrong to have used a "3RD party" as suggested by quite a few persons. But what is a 3rd party if I may ask in the actual sense of handling money transacted? Is Sedo a first or second party? Is Afternic a first or second party? Is Flippa a first or second party? Is Escrow.com a first or second party? Is DN.com a first or second party?

My only mistake was using a non-trusted medium for receiving funds.

Let me also ask those who deemed it fit to question only me while defending a buyer maybe because I am a Nigerian and buyer is an American, would you be comfortable if after 4 days of transferring a domain name, no single word from your supposed buyer?

Buyer accused me of being rude and sending threats. Which is more rude, one asking for payment of goods delivered or one who ignored and regarded by buyer as a nobody after receiving a package and confirmed it?

I even sent my Godaddy account details for a return of the domain name since buyer has refused to make payment. After over 24 hours of sending that email with no reply, I had to post his email on here and someone quickly identified that buyer is a member on here.

Every email was being replied UNTIL I had transferred the domain and ASKED for payment to which buyer claimed that that PARTICULAR section of the series of emails, which involved asking for payment, under same title, in same email subject he has previously replied to, was sent to a spam. I find that really HARD to believe. I use GMAIL. I know how it works. Once you have a exchanged emails with someone, gmail marks that email used in the conversation as IMPORTANT and rarely will any subsequent email between the two email go into spam.

What I see here is a case of a buyer trying to buy time in order to transfer the domain name out of FEAR for the fact that I am a Nigeria, a potential scammer. This no different from a man running when no one is chasing him.

Thank God for namepros. who knows? I may not have heard anything till this very moment as I type.

Also, let us assume that the email actual went into spam and buyer didn't see the email. Was he right to have kept quiet after over 4 days of receiving the domain in the account? What do you expect of a buyer under such circumstance?

I am a Nigerian and I am proud of my identity. I have no intention of hiding that under any circumstance whatsoever. I will tell you where I come from so that if you will avoid me, you better be quick about it.

What do I expect form some of you? I expect you to be very objective, pragmatic and logical in your dispensations. You should have said @jideofor, you are wrong for so so and so... and then call out jahfree and say you are wrong for keeping silent for too long. That's how to be objective, not taking sides like I see being done here.

Apparently, the break in communication was the cause of these whole unnecessary arguments and also the FEAR of what does not exist!

I am a Nigerian who transferred a domain before payment and the so called 3rd party who helped me receive the fund is a Nigerian and my friend based outside.

Just because one is from Nigeria does not mean he is a thief.

Have a Nice day folks and God bless Namepros.

Regardless of this thread, you would have gotten payment exactly when you did. The transfer started before this thread even started, and i was protecting myself by transferring the name. Its not a personal decision against you, I don't trust anyone... thats only because i have been scammed many times and now i can't trust, especially when things are odd or weird... and this transaction was odd.

And to think, I got bad vibes from a few people when I said I never transfer a domain until I gots the money in hand!
Never understood why people don't like this method - it works the same for everything. You buy a DVD online, you pay for it then receive it. You pay for groceries, then take them home. Same should be for domains.

Well, I am now a proud owner of an escrow.com account. So next time, I will use escrow for my deals and there won't be chance of anyone spitting me next time.

It's okay guys. No problem. Do you have better way for a Nigerian to receive payment of $50? Tell me if it's something I could learn.

Escrow.com is likely the best way to go for domains, assuming the new owners don't screw things up.

Other options that come to mind are Payoneer.com
-- you apply for a (pre-paid) International Master Card, connect it to your Paypal Account and can make withdrawals in Nigeria.

Neteller.com - lets you receive money in Nigeria free, with an email addy, even if you don't have an account.

There are others I learned about when I was going to get into this biz, about a year ago, with Crediturl.com - which used a unique URL, like a credit card number, for each transaction.
