Poll: Will .COM Remain King in 5 Years?

On March 15, 1985, the first ever .COM domain name was registered. By Q3 of 2021, there were 158.6 million .COM domains registered. That’s an incredible, and constant, growth. More recently, though, we’ve seen Web 3.0, cryptocurrency, and NFT startups opting for other extensions.

The likes of .XYZ and .IO are currently favored by these companies. Will other extensions become more dominant over time? Here, we want you to vote to decide whether .COM will remain king in five years time.

I Sold This Domain for $6,000

A domain investor has shared some details of their most recent sale. According to this discussion, the domainer registered a two-word .COM domain name in 2018 and even considered dropping the domain a couple of times since then.

Today, the investor will be pleased that they didn’t let the domain expire! After receiving a $1,000 offer via Uniregistry, the domainer submitted a counteroffer of $6,000, which was accepted. The domain itself is revealed in this discussion.

DDOS Attack Takes Down Dynadot

Dynadot is one of the most popular domain name registrars among domain investors. In fact, the company came out as the favorite registrar for domain investors in a 2021 poll, where Dynadot gained 48.7% of the vote.

It’s no surprise that a DDoS attack (distributed denial of service) this week made headlines in the domain industry. The company’s service is back up and running, but if you had issues logging in to Dynadot midweek, this was likely the reason.

What’s the Difference Between .COM and .XYZ?

Despite being around since 2014, the .XYZ extension really only caught the attention of both investors and end-users en masse in 2021. In 2021 alone, NameBio recorded $1.9 million worth of .XYZ sales. That’s compared with just $108,200 the year before.

The extension is getting more consideration from end-users, with potential discussion points surrounding the differences between .COM and .XYZ in terms of marketing, SEO, or consumer knowledge. Here, we’re discussing the differences between .COM and .XYZ.
