tips How to Find Chinese Buyers for Your Domain Names

Spaceship Spaceship
Many Chinese companies use Pinyin domain names to run their businesses. However, many of them later upgrade from their long Pinyin name to the short acronym equivalent. If you own an acronym domain name, such as LL, LLL, or LLLL, you may already have potential buyers for your domain name.

Here's a tip you can try to find potential buyers even if you don't know Chinese. This tip probably works best for .com domain names because .com is still the most preferred extension in China's corporate world. Also, LLLL is likely the longest you can go because there aren't many Chinese companies using five or more Pinyin words for their company names.

Suppose you own XYZ.com, here are the steps to find potential Chinese buyers:
  1. Visit Google Translate.
  2. In the input box, enter XYZ.
  3. Look for Chinese characters below the input box: 下一站.
  4. Paste 下一站 into Yabla.
  5. Check the result: xià yī zhàn.
  6. Visit domain names using the result: xiayizhan.cn, xiayizhan.com.cn, and other desired extensions (TLDs).
  7. If there is an active site, click around and pay close attention to pictures of retail stores, factories, a location map of branches, etc. to get a feel for the size of the company and the nature of its business. You can also use Google Translate to translate the site.
  8. If the sites don't list a way to contact them, you may be able to do a WHOIS lookup on those domain names to uncover the registrants' contact information.
Unfortunately, Google Translate does not always work. Therefore, you may need help from a native Chinese speaker or simply ask the Namepros community.

Please share with us your experience.

Nice Blog post like always.
I think we can use this also with 5L.com names where the first 2 letters mean the city.
It would be like to have City code + LLL

Great tips. Thanks.

Paste 下一站 into Yabla.

I think it may also be useful to look this directly into Baidu to check who is already using the specific combination in their website title.

Great info @Kassey Lee. Thank you. I can make a small contribution here.

After you enter your letters in the Input Box on the left, sure enough you see the Chinese Characters below the Input box. (for XYZ - 下一站)

Now, look on the right hand side box (Output), change the translated language to Chinese (simplified) and voila ! - you not only see Chinese translation 下一站 in the output box, but also the English translation below the output box (For 下一站 - Xià yí zhàn)

No need to go to Yabla. Have everything in one place !!

Towards better Domaining,
Vicky

if you want a further contributions, is advisable to check in Yabla. You will understand how the phrase is composed and multiple meanings. THE FOLLOWING STEP IS TO CHECK WITH http://iciba.com/ where you can find concrete examples of the phrase if relevant and then find the word in baidu to see how many results are there (and check if the characters you are looking for are consecutive and not broken)

ZIH (.info) = 自豪 = Proud... Interesting. What would I do with a name like that though?
Can be a brand for many products, such as running shoes. Please note that ZIH is not pure LLL but Pinyin(ZI) + acronym(H).

pifa = wholesale, bulk trade, distribution
It's Pinyin not acronym so this tip does not apply. The meaning "wholesale" is correct though.

Yes, this is what I consider exception, but generally companies do not include their city name in the domain name if they have a choice.

I think it may also be useful to look this directly into Baidu to check who is already using the specific combination in their website title.
Thanks for the tip. It's all research, research, research. The more you do, the better you understand your name. Sometimes I also put the acronym in Baidu and it may return good suggestion on what companies may be associated with the acronym.

This is not pure LLLL but Pinyin (YE) + LL, so my tip may not work.

Google Translate give:
PZZY:品质卓越>Pinzhí zhuoyue
Have you checked pinzhízhuoyue.cn and pinzhízhuoyue.com.cn?

XNX:新女性>New (type of) women
XNX:新男性>New (type of) men

新男性7
As a fashion brand? I'll just keep the number as part of the brand without any "translation", which makes the name unique.

Hi Ram, I've already submitted a blog post on numeric domain names to Namepros and it will be out any day. I don't have control of the publishing schedule. If you have not done so, you can follow me to get all my updates.

@Kassey Lee : is there any meaning in qii, Thanks in advance.

s there any meaning in qii,

QII:亲爱爱>Kiss, love, love

The correct Pinyin spelling for (love) is "ai" not"i", but many end users are going for the simpler spelling "i" instead. For example, a basketball video service was recently launched on igeqiu.com.

iGeQiu:爱个球>Love balls (as in basketball)
