Whats the biggest mistake or slip-up you've made in dealing with domains?

I think mine came when I was trying to register domains for xbox360 games, and was doing so in a hurry. I was feeling pretty proud with myself for picking up projectdark360.com.... until a few days later when I realised that there ISN'T a game called Project Dark, its actually called Perfect Dark.

Other than that, I guess registering wiigames.com and wiiforum.com, but forgetting to get the singular and plural versions of both.

I'm sure with so many more experienced domainers out there, there must be some funny, if not tragic, stories about domaining cock-ups

Registering a bellagio name years back . . . still regret that one.

registered bambi.tv and lamborghini.tv ... probably useless names AND with tm issues.

My biggest mistake was jumping onto the wrong bandwagons far too late into the game. Experience has taught me to stay away from these silly little things in future, if you dont get in very early you just waste your resources.

My biggest mistake... learning too far about the domaining game.
Back in 2000 I was already active with domains but had no idea they were strategic valuable assets. I knew nothing about monetizing.
Many good names are still dropping because there are lot of wannabe domainers (like us back in time :D ) who are waiting for an offer but don't know how to monetize parked names. In the end they drop their names because they don't see the point of paying the annual reg fee for a name that may not be wanted by anyone after all.
Patience is the key.
Also I let a few valuable names drop, which I would regret later.
I won't repeat some mistakes for sure ;)

My biggest mistake was probably registering my first 100 domains, or so! I regged fast, and crazy, thinking I knew it all! Following that, was being dumb enough to believe I had domains worth $10,000 -$25,000, because Sedo, Afternic, or even GreatDomains said so!!!

My biggest mistake was trying to be patient with 24domaindiscount, ended up losing a valuable domain.

I do have a small - but continuing - mistake I make, I am too spontaineous. I get in a hurry and pick up a domain that, down the road, I will look back at and say, "How the heck was I going to make money with that domain?"

When you reg a name, you should have a clear cut plan for how you will generate income with that domain, and persue that path after the purchase. Just letting it sit there is the kiss of death.

I just remember something that could possibly have proven a costly mistake.

About 5-6 years ago I put together a very amateurish website for a big drinking event we had every month at college called "Beersday"

The domain I picked up from Namezero's (who used to let you reg domains for free) was beerday.com - which I had the option to buy for a few dollars but didn't. Turns out beerday is the German word for Birthday, so if i'd kept ahold of it, I probably could have made a lot from parking.

Ah well, guess i'll never know

Lol. German for Birthday is Geburtstag. I guess this is why IDN hasn't been picked up by most domainers.

My mistakes have mainly been failing to register the other TLDs for my sites - both of my business domains for which I registered the .com had the .net taken soon afterwards by speculators, though no one's approached me trying to sell them and I suspect that in a few months or so I'll be able to get at least one of them back anyway.

Yknow, its weird - back when I was trying to find out what happened to the domain, I came across a LOAD of german sites with some form of greeting including 'beerday' and a load of pictures of people with birthday cakes - so I guess I put 2 and 2 together, bypassed the german dictionary, and came up with 5 :P

Interesting thread.

One of my best faux pas, (yes, there are more than one), was registering my first 2 "genome" names spelled as "gnome"- they were something like gnomemedical , gnomedcal, gnomed. I remember that it was about 5 minutes after I had posted an appraisl request on the NP board, when it hit me. "No! I, just, d-i-d-n't do what I think I just did, did I?!" :o :-/

I frantically googled and landed on a site that was a parody on the stupid people that made this dim-witted mistake. The site was peopled w/ little bearded gnomes that seemed to be snickering at me. I rushed to the whois, ran a check and, thankfully, one that had the correct spelling and another w/ the "ge" that was my 3rd "gnome" choice were available, I regged them, hurried back to the forum, edited the right names into the post and... breathed a sigh of relief. B-)

Hi,

Like most domainers have probably done, I've not checked properly and registered typo domains by mistake.

Nothing to do but grin, take it on the chin and move on...

Mike.

I managed to do that, but I saw off the company concerned so I still have the domain and the site that goes on it.

After someone registered Obestatin.com a while back, I did my research and found the hormone Grehlin. I could have registered GrehlinBlocker(s).com but I typo'd and got GrhelinBlocker(s).com The correct spelling, I'm sure, is worth thousands >.<

I did get GhrelinHormone.com though.

I sold a generic movie name to Sony Pictures for only $200 not knowing that domains were worth way more when I first got into the game. Sony has deeeeep pockets. :(
