hey there, i've been toying with an idea lately.

i want to start up a real blog,

i have a countless number blogs but they are meant for marketing. They have very keyword oriented domain titles, the content is very niche specific.

well, lately i've been considering starting a real personal blog, but the domain name i have in mind is long (but memorable)

the domain name is 23 letters and 5 words. It's a memorable name for a blog (imo) but the domainer in me says the domain name is to long.

i don't want to give it away, but imagine a domain name like this: raindropsfallingonmyhead.com, the name in mind is nothing like this...i just used this example because it's about the same length and structure of the name i had in mind.

i mean, from a domainer point of view, i'd say a domain like that is too long and doesn't have much resell, but from a personal blogger stand point, the domain is memorable and is easy to remember

anythoughts or suggestions would be helpful

It depends, even a long name can have value. The only value to a domain is not resale value. I would certainly reg a domain like investinginthestockmarket.com, so they can have value.

I've had the same thoughts. I think you should register it if you like it. Its your blog, do what you want. Then, if the 5L acronym is there, get that too and you can redirect so you have the best of both worlds.

I would keep it to no more than three words if possible - 5 words and its a story not a domain :D

Its too long but for a personal blog then who cares, I say give it a go.

Since its a personal blog and you are not aimed at making any money off of it, go for the cool factor. Who cares if its long.

From a domainers stand point: NEVER REGISTER PHRASES!

stay away from LONG NAMES - there are a lot of short names much more brandable and in time will gain more value!

This is 1999 mindset thinking. First, people can type, and a lot faster, moreso now days due to pc's and being on them all the time. Second, if you think names like ApplyForCreditCards.com, or RefinanceYourMortgage.com is not brandable and not worth anything, I'll give you $20 for them!

I personally wouldn't consider a domain longer than 3 words, but that is just my personal preference. As mentioned above, do what you want. It's your blog!

If it is a personal blog, though, I would recommend firstnamelastname.com if possible. This is always a good route to go.

i say it's good if you want to keep and maintain it, but not for resell purposes. good luck with it.

blogs are about content, but 5 words might be a bit much.
Short or long if you have good quality content they will find you. Humans a lazy beasts it really better be memorable if it's a phrase.

if their traffic is mostly from search engines such as google all people will need to do is click on it.

Ive done well rebranding a site to a much longer keyword domain as the main URL: www.SearchSubmissionSoftware.com thou it originally had a much much shorter domain name associated - and I also even have SearchSubmitSoftware.com and SearchSubmitTool.com but opted for that as it had highest keyword search frequency

I think it's ok, IMO. If the words are good and they create a popular phrase, they can be as good or better than short domains. Maybe you can reg both the long, keyword domain and make an acronym or shortened version and reg that too. Build the site on the long name and promote the short acronym name. RainDropsKeepFallingOnMyHead.com could also be known as, Radrop.com , or something like that..lol

You have to look at the intent. As others have said, if it's for resale, bad idea. But if it's a personal blog where you're writing for fun it doesn't matter. Look at the insanely long URLS people have at blogger or LiveJournal. And those are hard to remember with all the slashes and sections. If a phrase is memorable, then it works.

If your site really takes off, you can buy the acronym for it. Look at the TV show Dancing With the Stars, everyone calls it DWTS (hmm, that's for sale. ABC should buy that site.)

Go for it, because now I really want to know what the phrase is. LOL.

Good point.. That seems to happen to alot of popular TV shows, and other media.

Americas Next Top Model is known as ANTM
Deal or No Deal is known as DOND

Those the only two I can think of from the top of my head but I'm sure there are many more.

maybe i can get the long version + acronym?

Like i said, it's a personal blog and i'm not planning to resell.... the thing is that while it is a longer domain name, it's easily memorable and sticks to pple's memory..

i'm probably gonna get it this weekend... and then i'll share the name...since it is a longer name, i don't have to worry about people reging it.

I have BuyDomainNamesForSale.com, which is obviously long. But I love it and I just forward NameManor.com to my site and use that as a site name too. I think long DN's are good as long as it is a real phrase or solid keywords. You should be good if it is easily remembered.
