Visit it. If it's registered, WHOIS info. If not, I contemplate buying it and 90% of the time don't buy it.

Look at it again after you've slept, it might look good at first but write it and look at it, if it looks ugly the next day you saved yourself some money. :)

Available, by any means (hand reg/auctions etc etc)

Ah, that changes it then as in,

-how did I end up finding that domain? was it actively searched for?.. if yes, then I'd regged it.

-If I found it by mistake then I'd do research to determine what 'type' it is, ie. brandable, keyword, geo, domain that could be monetized for its traffic, etc....and then I'd respond accordingly.

..that's a strange question to ask tbh though. It's like you don't know why you found a domain you were searching for in the first place? ... :)

Ok, let me try and simplify it a little. You have found a domain name, and are deciding whether or not to purchase it. What's the first thing you do? Are you an impulse buyer who just goes ahead and purchases it anyway? Do you check Whois? Do you run a number of keyword searches? Do you rely upon valuation tools?

but, that's what I'm confused with, how did I end up finding that name?

Personally, I almost never find free domains by accident... They always come up after hours of research where I know exactly what I'm looking for.

Obviously we have a different approach here hence the confusion.

It's not relevant. You have found it whether it be from an expired list, or GD Closeouts, that doesn't matter. Ok, so you've seen a domain name?

Ofc it matters. Do you think I've done all that research *not* to buy that name?

When I find free names after hours of research the only logical action is to purchase... why did I research them if I wasn't going to purchase them.

Again, I'm pretty sure we have a different approach to how we look for names so consider my answer as: I purchase them :)

- Price
- Do I like the name?
- Can I use it as an end user(developer)?
- If it is not a dotcom then in how many other TLDs it is already registered?

This is something I would have done in the early days, but not anymore. Its interesting that you are the only person who has mentioned this so far.

I completely disagree with this.

If you wait too long and the domain name gets snatched up while your dilly dallying around. Then it's worse then not acting on impulse. First you should develop the skill to reg names. If you don't have that take 15 mins on the domain do some Recon, Google it, Look at other simailar names that have sold. I thinking 15 mins is enough time to figure out if you want to pull the trigger or not on a hand reg.

I suppose this is down to inexperience that many new domainers fall into.

What I can recommend for people who can't make a decision is. Check Google look at namebio for similar sales check to see if other similar names maybe developed. Maybe check to see if any other extentions are taken.Ask your self if the domain sounds right. Ask your self do u think a company would call it self this name. You can make a decision under 10 mins with this method. Also don't forget to check for trademarks.

I was talking from a newbie perspective , inexperienced ones ... sorry, should hv said that

even without 'pulse regging', i still make mistakes ... but the rates are way lower

Check its history, traffic,...
