Ok, so you find a domain - what's the first thing you do?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Shoot the hostage!

@DefinitelyDomains - Were you asking if available or unavailable?

If registered: non-cached whois, archive.org, hosterstats
https://gwhois.org/namepros.com
https://web.archive.org/web/*/namepros.com
http://www.hosterstats.com/historicaldns.php?domain=namepros.com

If the site is live, go there direct to see if it's parked/for sale/developed

If unregistered: add to Standby List, archive.org, hosterstats, although many times I stick stuff on my Standby List, and don't research until I have time or if the Supersale starts : grin :

age
how many extensions are taken
shorter is better
product/service appeal
wider scope
previous sales of similar name at Namebio
decide how I can sell, before I purchase
trend of such domains (for example: cloud, mag, vr, weed, health, names are hot today)
avoid confusion in pronounce-ability (for example: 925 / 9-5 / 9 to 5 / nine 2 five / nine-five / nine two five)

I think how lucky or stupid the owner is to own such a domain.

I completely disagree with this.

If you wait too long and the domain name gets snatched up while your dilly dallying around. Then it's worse then not acting on impulse. First you should develop the skill to reg names. If you don't have that take 15 mins on the domain do some Recon, Google it, Look at other simailar names that have sold. I thinking 15 mins is enough time to figure out if you want to pull the trigger or not on a hand reg.

My first port of call is usually the gov. TESS trademark search, then archive.org (if it's a drop).

Think of whether it is a good or bad name and reflect on the time when I was unable to distinguish either.

When I find a domain name that I am not to sure about the first thing I do is check the trademark database.

Ofc it matters. Do you think I've done all that research *not* to buy that name?

When I find free names after hours of research the only logical action is to purchase... why did I research them if I wasn't going to purchase them.

Again, I'm pretty sure we have a different approach to how we look for names so consider my answer as: I purchase them :)

Check backlink history, spam score, archive.org history, whether or not it is listed for sale anywhere.

1. Exact keyword search
2. Is it Adsense blocked?
3. No dashes, no dots
4. Short wins

Double-check its availability to be reg'd or purchased. Lost of a lot of hours for domains that have turned out to be either reg'd or unavailable for purchase.

I guess domains

If I think of a concept or tech idea etc
And the relevant. Com of the idea is available I buy it

With more and more people becoming domains etc add to that businesses themselves also looking to buy domains direct etc good domains are being snapped up so fast - timing is important

Better to waste 10 dollars on a domain you may not want than lose out on a decent domain because you took too long thinking about whether to buy the domain or not etc and in that time someone else bought it and then decides not to sell etc

Gut feeling. The more experienced you are, the better. If you make a mistake you learn from it and move on.

how did I end up finding that domain? was it actively searched for?.. if yes, then I'd regged it.

There is something mysterious in your answer. Do you mean you search the domain in Google keyword tool ?

Or could it be that you have a secret weapon to count how many people visited the domain website or the whois record or else ?

Nothing mysterious in my answer , most probably I didn't explain it well.

By 'actively searched for' I meant searched by me. Was I searching for domains and found one that I liked or was it an accidental finding?

Mainly find the end users for it and the number of words it contains

•••
Google its keywords to have an estimate of number of end users

check the domain value and to whom i can sell the domain
