ivintage.com is currently the hottest expired auction across Dynadot, Namecheap, and other platforms - with a current bid of $1,262.

But that’s not the point of my post.

According to NameBio, the same domain was sold via GoDaddy for $1,025 around November 13, 2018, most likely through expired auctions as well.

So someone paid $1,025 for this domain back in 2018… and then let it expire again?

That raises a simple question:
Would you let a $1,025 domain expire - or would you at least try to sell it first?

I’d try and sell it first

Sometimes the owner's life expires, and the domain lapses without renewal.

There can be many reasons a domain expires, and the details are not always known.

You never know what actually happened.

From what I’ve seen in the Web Archive, in 2024 it was a Shopify store selling winter clothes. It probably didn’t work out.

would you let a domain that you can sell for 10k today expire? Every week or two a name like that hits the market.

Maybe the owner made a lot of money and this domain means nothing anymore? Maybe they gave it as a gift to someone? Maybe they are one of the three Chinese astronauts stuck in space? Maybe they feel the domain is bad luck?

Maybe the owner had someone else register the domain, and that person forgot to renew it. It happens.

I've sold a domain for 3k+ that is available to register today. Normally I'd buy it back since I already made 3k profit off of it but I haven't. I'd have to run through the database of all of my sales over 23+ years but very possible there might be more than the one domain I'm sure is available.

well leta say domain expires today midnight

but at midnite minus 5
I begin sex with my wife

and then at midnite I am about to eject the boys...

so for this reason I would not renew.

but thats basically the only time.

It really depends. I've let domains expire that I spent more than that on.

Reasons:

A domain's value can go to zero after you buy it, especially if it was trendy.

Even if it doesn't go to zero, your time might be worth more than the $333 you'd gain from selling it. (User auctions can be 1/3rd of their expired counterparts.)

In those cases, the best solution is to let it expire at a registrar that shares in the expired auction revenue, such as @namesilo.

@Bravo Mod Team - A domain's value can go to zero after you buy it, especially if it was trendy - It made me think of NFTs.com

Maybe they bought it for $1,025 through GoDaddy Auctions (as an expired domain) because it seemed cool, started a business on it, it didn’t work out, and they let it go.

Let it go. :xf.grin:

Anything is possible. I sold a hand reg for 3K two years ago, the owner dropped it a year later and HD sell it for 5k now.

Renew the domain for 5 years so even if the clock runs out on you ..at least you know the domain wont drop for the next 5 years
