Yes, most of the world is oblivious to the process and why having a good domain matters.
Right now top-tier marketers and corporations know the value, small business is starting to wake up, but the general public has ho idea.
Once the general public understands that you didn't have to buy a domain in 1999 to own a good domain right now, prices will shoot up and everyone who is domaining now will be very wealthy.
Only time will tell, but I think that's a pretty accurate forecast for the future.
If you look at most auctions, even for the good names, there are only 200 or so bidders for the one word .COM's. Sure the auctions can go into the high 5 figures or more, but there are 7 billion people on the planet... and only 200 are participating in high end auctions.
Then look at 'good' names; EMD, very brandable, 4L, etc... Most of the times you will only see 10 - 20 bidders. Again, 7 billion people on this rock, only a handful bidding.
Domains and domaining might be old to those few that have been doing it for a decades, but it is still very new to the entire world.
